Broken bones, anyone?

I have one quick question for anyone who can answer it.  Have you ever gone to the hospital because of a broken bone?  I am asking this because I am writing a story and I came to a part where the kid breaks his arm.  I never broke anything in my life, so I don't know what the hospital procedures are.  Do they give you laughing gas, inject you with pain killer, or anything?  I know it sounds stupid but I want to keep it at least semi-factual.

Darth Wyndisis

Gosh, I feel so ignorant... :-[

So basically you go to the ER, wait for the people who have more serious injuries to go ahead of you, then your in a room with a doctor who puts you in a sling/cast and gives you pain killers and sends you on your merry way?

Well, to be fair, we went right to an orthopedist rather than the hospital, my mom freaked out and didn't want me to wait in line forever (and die of a broken bone apparently, lol), so we went to a specialist right away who took care of the problem. But my case was different so I can't really claim to be the norm in this situation.

Edit: Woops, meant to edit my last post in this thread, accidentally deleted it...  :-\

Thanks.  Now that I think of it, I might not need to make it all that factual.  At that point in the story, the kid is unconscious and hallucinating (dreaming, I guess), so I suppose it would would be safe to have the kid wake up with a sling on his arm, and for the doc to hand him his meds saying, "Here ya go, Timmy." ?   But that does seem kind of cheap.  Would it be reasonable to say that they gave him laughing gas (or anything) and then worked with the bone and put on a cast?  I am unconfident in my ability to think logically, as you can see.

Jack

That plausible to me, if the injury that broke his bone also knocked him out.

On a side note, does the medical profession still use laughing gas? That seems so... 1800s.

Darth Wyndisis

They used it on me when they were drilling my tooth.  I don't they would use it in that situation now that you mention that.

When I broke my toe, it didn't hurt to bad. But after a couple minuts, it swelled, and when I stepped, I could feel my swelled toe alot!

MagmarFire
