Or maybe it's a wind mark from the hat making him a wind sorcerer. Just sort of showing a "look, this is fake" to everyone.

That's exactly what I thought.  Either that or I think it's a scar.  But in the manga for The Minish Cap he has the mark under both eyes.

That's why I now think they're just marks that he put on himself. I guess it is physically possible, but I don't know why Vaati would have two semetrical scars on both cheeks. (shrugs)

Okay. I'm going with the theory of makeup. I even made a poll on Quizilla on this same topic and it's been sitting for about a year-ish. And I know this is only a fanart picture, but Vaati looks really realistic, and it looks like he's wearing makeup.

It's makeup.  The other Minish kids would never play games with him as a child, and when he was in high school, he joined the drama department.

Then, a few years after college, his girlfriend left him-- for another girl.  He's been goth ever since.

How's that for a theory

But in all seriousness, I'm now convinced that it's make-up.

They could be bags under his eyes from not getting enough sleep.
