It is.  Learning magic from espers is enough to make it my new FF game in the main series.  Then again, I've only ever played III, IV, and VI, so....

He was not as hard as I thought he would be.  I actually had to start over several times so Locke could steal the Genji Shield from him, not because he was handing my butt to me on a silver platter.

I was expecting trouble with Hidon, but it was rather easy as well.  Of course, I had Celes with me, and she's in the early 50's level-wise right now.  I just wish I had Steal/Mug equipped to Gogo.  Oh well.

lol I have the SNES version, so I probably don't know about some of what your talking about. You can equip steal/mug to Gogo?

Well, I'm playing the GBA version, so I can't speak for the SNES version, but I don't think they're going to be that different; asides from fixing bugs and retranslating the script, they only added three new espers and a few optional dungeons.  Don't take my word for it, though; head over to GameFAQs, Wikipedia, or the FF Wiki to check on the differences.

Gogo is a Mimic; as such, his/her/its signature ability is Mimic, which copies the action taken before Gogo's turn (but I can't remember if this was only your ally's last action or if it included the last action of the enemy).  However, by going to Gogo's status screen, you can equip up to three other abilities to Gogo.  It includes the basic Attack, Item, and Magic command, but also include everyone else's abilities (I think Trance was excluded, and Umaro is in a constant berserk status, so his abilities come from Relics that I'm not quite sure Gogo can equip).  When using this commands, Gogo knows every move the original user of the ability knows.  For example, if Cyan knows all of his Bushido techniques, then Gogo will know all of them as well if s/he/it has Bushido equipped.  Magic, however, is different; Gogo has the same spell list as the person who knows the most spells in your current party.  For example, my Celes knows almost all of the spells; if she, Gogo, Strago, and Relm (Strago and Relm are behind in learning spells) are in the same party, than Gogo will know all the spells Celes know.  Gogo is unable to equip espers, so s/he/it can't learn spells on his/her/it own, nor can his/her/its stats receive the boosts espers give.  However, if Gogo is in desperate need of HP and MP, there's always the Muscle Belt and Crystal Orb, which provides a 50% boost to HP and MP, repsectively.

Yeah, thats kinda how it is in the SNES version (I think). But yes, from what I've heard there are new Dungeons, but I do not think that retranslating some of the Monster names (like Ultima Weapon as opposed to Atma Weapon) is necessary. Atma Weapon sounds pretty exotic, and Ultima sounds...well, bland.
