ZOMG.  I capture and name a Bellsprout right outside Violet City, only to discover that a boy in the house just by the entrance will trade his Onix for a Bellsprout.  And I just named my Bellsprout Sherwood because I plan on training him up for the first gym, considering it's tradtionally Ground/Rock, so of course I can't trade him now.  And now that I'm back on the route, I can't find another Bellsprout! DX

Oh, I definitely plan to keep looking.

Someone later on in the game will have an Abra up for trade, right?  Despite its stupidity, it's somewhat tradtional for me to bulldoze my way through the Elite Four and the Champion with a Kadabra (or an Alakazam, if someone's around to help me with the evolution).
