What Makes Zelda Great - The Four Swords Saga

For those of you who don't check the mainpage very often, I'm yet another series of articles: What Makes Zelda Great. Basically it's a retrospective focusing on one of the Zelda games at a time and looking to see what that game did better than the other titles of the series. Since I doubt my ability to think of every little thing that they did, I've decided to ask you guys why you think the games stand out from each other.

And as you can probably guess, considering which board this is being posted on, the next article focuses on the Four Swords and Four Sword Adventures. So let me ask you: what do you love about this pair of Zelda titles? What really stood out to you when you played them, and what did they do better than any other game in the series? What makes FS and FSA great?

Oh, and feel free to comment on both of them simultaneously or individually, and remember to say which one you're talking about so as to avoid confusion between the two. I'm really counting on you guys for this one - I've never played Four Swords and haven't played FSA in a while, so I'm pretty rusty on this pair. Anything you have to say would be greatly appreciated!

It really broke the mold of what is Zelda. Even more that Z2, but the mold wasn't really there when that was made, It was definately different.

FSA was the first Time zelda was competitive too, Other than just collecting the most Force gems, but in the shadow arena (Or whatever)

This game also had the secret Zelda game Tetra's trackers on it in the Japan game.

You got to hear the Voices of Zelda characters for the first time.

The ability to unlock the riddle sidequest in ALttP would be neat.  If, you know, my friend actually wouldn't mind helping me play through Four Swords more than once.

Of course, I have yet to ask him again.....I'll have to go over to his house soon.

Oh, and Roy, Four Swords was the first competitive Zelda title, as players competed to get the most rupees to earn a medal.

I wasn't really talking about that I was talking about the shadow Arena.

FS was the first time they introduced Vaati (I think), I know that made a certain member of our forums happy, Even though it's not the vaati she likes.

I liked how, in FSA, they combined 2D graphics with the 3D ones, like in explosions and beams.

What makes the original four swords great really is a number of things! First of All it was the most advanced 2-D Zelda game of its time being the first 32bit Zelda game and its the first time we got to play any zelda game with the toon style graphics (this was released before wind waker don't forget) so it gave us A chance to see the style that was so controversial before its major release in the wind waker. secondly it gave us a chance to do something that we had never thought possible before play Zelda with more than one person this was truly a revolutionary thing at the time(although they really should have made it so you at least had the option to play as a single player). another thing about the original four swords is that it introduced us to The biggest baddest guy next to Ganondorf, that freaky eyeball monster known as Vaati the wind mage. This alo was the beginning of what would become a major part of the zelda series in general without the original four swords there would be Know Four swords adventures or Minish cap and more than likely there will be future games that blossom forth from the original four swords as well.
     Now as for Four swords adventures this was nothing short of one of the best games ever made as are all zelda games but this one receives far less recognition than it derives. It two me was a throwback to the original four games with a lot of influence from the 3-D games in it. It has a classic storyline with all those strange little oddities about it that zelda can be known for but it has alot of raced that were previously seen only in 3-D games  such as the gerudo (other than gannon of course) and it also introduced the Zuna a desert  race not seen before in any previous game. The puzzles were well designed and the map covered classic parts of hyrule but also introduced some parts not yet seen before. This Game also tells us how gannon got the trident he had in Alttp. FSA was truly an epic games and was one of my favorites Id say it was a perfected 2-D game that combined  the old and new generations of zelda games. As it Featured the game play Pre-Oot is known for but also included alot of the elements that post-Oot is known for. A perfect example is the soundtrack its like a mixture of everything from both zelda eras the whole game is really like this but just listen to the games soundtrack and you will know what I mean! I sure hope this helps!

I agree on you with almost everything, The thing is that that was really hard to read cause it lacked punctuation...

I couldn't resist.

I loved Four swords+ mainly cause I could play it alone.

And some of those moments in the game were really good.

Such as rescuing Zelda after going through the tower. (That tower was the devil)

I remember having much more fun going through the tower than most other dungeons in the Zelda series altogether.

I also like how you are limited to only a single item. This makes the game more puzzling and fun.

Fourswords adventures for gamecube is my favorite zelda game. it is very different than the others so i think thats what makes it stand out. And also unlimited bombs and arrows are awsome. And the fact that its composed of levels, instead of a mass of quests, makes it easier too play when you have only short periods of free time (like me). And of couse theres the formations, multiplayer, dark link, endless enimies, and the puzzles. i love the puzzles. And you dont have to collects rupees to buy items, which eliminates the loong boring task of cutting down fields of grass, or hunting down tresure chests, which may or may not contain rupees anyway. Force gems are way easier to find, and you almost always get to the amount you need before the ennd of the level.  :) :) :) :)

Because of this topic I recently played the entire game over again...

In 3 hours... :-X :-X :-X

Okay one thing I liked was my favorite level The infiltration of hyrule castle. A great stealth relied level in the beginning and more action oriented near the end.

All the levels have a flow like this. It's awesome.

Another is the characters. They all have a story you can see right when you meet them.

The flow of the game is even all the way through, and the Item system is great.

Also Despite having a very Linear nature you were pretty much made to wander very... Un-Linearly, Both in towns and Dungeons.

And I like how they introduced the Zuna race (one I hope will Reappear. They were neat.)

The placement in the timeline I just discovered I'll discuss in another topic though.

On and it had something only OoT had. An Escape with Zelda while protecting her.

I bet link looks so manly when he protects the girls like Malon and Zelda in that game.
