They can't come up with their own ideas.

The PS3 has had motion control since before the Wii. That image caption is misleading.

Also, if this is the same controller I'm thinking of, it's not gonna overthrow the Wii remote by a long shot. Don't worry.
What, you expect me to say something witty?

The Glamour Nazi

Yeah, The Wii has them on overused motion sensing.

HylianHero92

But why must they copy Nintendo's ideas?! If they want to be successful they should do it with their own ideas!

And I'm not scared they'll overthrow Nintendo. That will never happen.

Twilight Wolf

Dude, copying is the name of the game. Without copying, consoles wouldn't have online play or use optical discs to store games, much less use gamepads.

That said, I'll be happy to see the PS3 not get this controller. I don't want any sort of Wii-like control scheme implemented lest it become oversaturated with shovelware.

Media follows media. That's how things progress, they take others' ideas and expand on them.

also the eye toy could be considered motion controls, so technically nintendo ripped off sony, but if i recall there have been motion sensitive controls for games even before that

I'm not saying Nintendo's ideas are totally original, I'm just saying that, instead of making their own, original idea, they've copied Nintendo just because Nintendo's successful. If Nintendo wasn't making as much money, Sony and Microsoft wouldn't dream of making motion sensing controls. But when Nintendo made motion controls, the idea wasn't really all that popular.

I'm not saying it's shocking they'd do this or it's never happened before. I'm trying to say it's simply... wrong. There's nothing just or moral about it!

Rev Rabies

actually their motion sensitivity isn't what's popular, people are more drawn to nintendo because it's full of great party games.

Uximadesk

HH92, chill out, maybe this is just the next step in gaming, and every console is going to have to take it if they want to stay afloat.
MS and Sony chose to have sharper graphics and better online interface, Wii chose to aim at a broader public with motion sensitivity, they just took different paths, but I think they will all eventually have technologies that resemble each other/

Hi no Seijin

It's really not that big of a deal unless Sony's motion sensitive controller is an exact replica of the Wii-mote.

If I recall correctly, Sony had a patent on motion control before Nintendo did. Please correct me if I'm wrong though. Still, Nintendo is an innovative company that isn't afraid to take risks. I believe because of that, they're the most successful company.

From what I can tell of the patent (Firefox zoom ftw!) it looks nearly identical.

Believe it or not, you are  ;)

Nintendo got the patent a few months after the Gamecube's release (Nov. 18, 2001) after production on the "Revolution" had gotten far enough. Sony integrated motion controls just weeks before mass production of the PS3 started. How do I know? I remember being enraged Sony was copying Nintendo, much as they are now.

Uximadesk

Oh, right I remembered!
I remember doing a presentation on the early Revolution way back in middle high, I do remember reading almost all the specs the Wii now has.

Sweet. :)
I'd hoped I was wrong.
Nintendo was smart when they targeted more audiences than just one age group. Problem is, most of the games suck now. I hope the next generation of consoles includes a Nintendo system devoted completely to the core gamer. Older audiences don't need innovation- in fact, they resent change. They'll remain satisfied with the Wii. Just a dream of mine is all.
