I can't really think of anything that would classify Zelda as an RPG.

Were you conscious when you wrote that?! Zelda was the very first RPG. RPG means Role Playing Game, not turn based battles and annoying stats.

Uhh, no. That would be Dungeons and Dragons.

From a programming standpoint, anything that deals damage probably has a stat involved that tells the program how much life to subtract from enemies' variables. A player might not be able to see these stats, but they're still there.

Zelda was/is/(I hope)always will be an ADVENTURE game.

An RPG Usually has a stat hit/miss thing, even if it's really simple.

Zelda doesn't rely on numbers to hit like an RPG does. It uses if your sword hits it it's hurt.

Zelda in no way classifies as an RPG other than you're playing the role of Link, but that'd mean EVERY game is a RPG.

By that logic, every game's an RPG.

I quote myself for Truth, Zelda is not an RPG.

HylianHero92

Oh, my mistake. Zelda was the first RPG video game.  Myiamoto even said it himself. (Don't ask me when or where though, i can't remember  ;) )

And no, not every game would be defined as an RPG by "my logic"

The Glamour Nazi

Yeah, your logic says anything where you assume the role of someone means it's a role playing game.

Unless you play yourself. (Which would be AWESOME!)

Try Adventure for the Atari 2600.

Zelda doesn't rely on numbers to hit like an RPG does. It uses if your sword hits it it's hurt.

The thing is, though, different swords deal different amounts of damage per hit, still bringing up the argument about a hidden variable supporting the RPG elements of the game. It wouldn't be too long of a shot to say that other variables include hitbox range and generic pseudorandom elements like enemy position, etc.

I guess this is just one of those situations where it doesn't really matter if a game's classified as what, since the arguably "necessary" criteria are in very gray areas, making it rather difficult to definitively conclude one side or the other as fact. Kind of like anime. If it's "not Japanese" (heh, I hate the definition of anime, too  :'( ), then it's not anime. Some things, though, are so very influenced by the anime style that any dividing lines between anime and non-anime are pretty much negligible.

So anyway, how did we get off the topic about E3 and onto an RPG definition debate?

Shigeru's talking about people thinking Zelda is an RPG.

Interview with Miyamoto and Wired.com about new zelda and mario

So it looks like the  new Zelda is still fairly early into development.

MagmarFire

I figured a bump to this topic is relevant, given the week.

E3 2010 is here, guys! Will Nintendo sweep the show with Zelda? Or will others overshadow it?

...Yeah. Games overshadowing ZELDA? Come, now... :P

Start discussing!

Does anyone know if Pokemon Black and White will be shown off at E3?

I'd also like to hear more about Metroid: Other M.  And news about the next Fire Emblem game would be nice, especially if the mechanics return to the FE 8 system.  Seriously, FE 8 worked; why didn't they stick with it?

I suppose it's too close to the release date to hear about Birth By Sleep (September 7, 2010!), but it would still be nice if we can hear something about Kingdom Hearts 3.

Considering that HeartGold/SoulSilver weren't showcased last year, I kinda doubt Black/White will.

Innovation.

358/2 Days was released September 29 last year, and Nintendo's E3 was on June 2. I don't see a problem. Still, I didn't know that the release date was September 7! That's awesome!

I also expect something about Re:coded, if the rumors of it being on the Nintendo DS are true.

EDIT: Seems like they may be! Another Kingdom Hearts game for the DS? How awesome is that!?
