Well, you need to upload them to a site and provide a link.  I use http://putfile.com  Hope that helps.

Go to the link that ShadowLink gave you (or flickr.com, or photobucket.com), sign up for their service, follow the directions for uploading a picture, do so, and then use the IMG button (in the two rows of buttons above the editing window) to create a set of tags that look like {IMG}IMAGENAME{/IMG} except with brackets instead of french braces and the link to the image instead of IMAGENAME. You can't upload pictures here, if that's what you're asking.

It's really only as complicated as you make it. The have explained in rather detailed terms how to go about the procedure. I hope you're able to figure it out.

How do you use your own pictures for your avatars?

You need to have a URL of the image.  Go to your profile and put in the URL and update it.  The image has to be a specific size, which I think is 100 x 100 pixels, max.
