Just whenever someone else is on with you, you don't check the profile, just in case?

Nope. Most of the boards I go have an announcement at the bottom of the page that it's someone's birthday when it happens. I usually only look at someone's profile if they're new or if I want to PM them, in which case I usually just press the PM button on a post they made.
