What?  DW is posting something serious?!

Well, yes... sort of.

So when I was reading through Tacheon's music thread and when he said he wanted to be popular on the internet it got me thinking:  Why do some of the stupidest videos on YouTube get to be so popular?  It seems like the formula for success is to be a slightly eccentric person who talks to a camera and asks people to "plox subscribz lol."  Like you can click on some video that shows up on the front page and then see some random person saying, "Hey, everyone.  So... um... I'm really tired today and I don't feel like making a video, but I suppose I will anyway.  So yeah...  You know what's like... so gay?  Root beer floats...  Those things are sooo gay...  Well, that's all the time I have for today; MAKE SURE YOU SUBSCRIBE."  Then you look at the viewing statistics and you see that the video has like ten million views, a hundred thousand likes, and three hundred dislikes and you say to yourself, "WHY?"  How can people see any value in that kind of crap?  Then the videos that actually took some sort of effort to make have maybe one hundred or so likes.  What is up with that?

Excellent question.

I've looked at a few "featured" videos in my time and none of them struck me as being any better or more worthwhile than 90% of the other videos out there. Most of them were just like you described -- some random idiot blathering about something. Others were people who think they're hilarious. The only thing I notice in common about all of them is that the video quality is *super* good... I wonder if that's all you need to become a partner. Of course, if you get enough ad money you can buy whatever kind of camera you want. :/

Aside from that, my guess is probably that they all had a friend of a friend who was already a YouTube partner.

That's not to say there are no good YouTube partners, though -- some are great. It's just that I've seen many more quality members far more deserving of any kind of special treatment than most of the ones already there.

Oh, and what is with the new homepage? YouTube claims to listen to our feedback, so I just have to wonder, who the hell did they ask that thought it was a good idea? I only know one person who likes it, and that's opposed to dozens of other people I know who hate it with a passion.
What, you expect me to say something witty?

I can't stand the new page either. It takes forever to navigate well and it is just not a necessary change.

As for getting views...I've tried everything I could think of to make our skits easy to find. I think, honestly, you either have to have a bunch of people from Facebook/Twitter subscribe to you write away and flood the place with videos every day. that's what a lot of these ranters seem to have done. Other than that, if you do sketch comedy, you have to do something that people will search for, come across, and share. Pizzadudemanguy started the whole YouTube SSB4 craze because people YouTube Smash Brothers a lot. Smosh got famous for the Pokemon Theme Song. Unfortunately, for every FronknDego or Smosh, there's twenty helloimmacs and boxxys.

Tobuscus is pretty good. Shane Dawson is okay...

Machinima rarely has anything good. All they got is a trillion CoD Modern Warfare videos that nobody gives a crap about.

Maybe that's why they bought the Featured status for those videos. :P

Hey you know what? I would love to see some idiot blathering about how much he hates Youtube make it to the Featured status!

That would be epic. An interesting idea, to be sure...

I hold the copyrights to the idea, Mags. You have my permission to use it, though. Just mention me in the description, complimenting how awesome I am.

You know what I don't get? Censoring on Youtube. The first season of Sekirei on Youtube is uncensored, but when you move on to the second season, there are out-of-place fogs EVERYWHERE.
It's probably not Youtube I should be blaming, but still!

Barats and Bereta are pretty amazing. They consistently put out good skits. Wish I was at their level.

Rhett and Link are kinda funny. They never produce anything BAD, but not everything blows me away.

I've thought about doing something out of characters, but honestly I can't think of anything to say. I don't wanna do a blog where it's basically just a public diary.

Yeah, the same goes for Sanity Not Included. I dunno, it seems like they're running out of ideas.

Anyone ever watch the Annoying Orange? I find his material to be hilarious.
