It does if you want free potions from the Potion Shop. Without it, you can't pick up mushrooms, which will give you free potions if you give them to the right person.

It's very useful if you want to keep both your bottles and your wallet full! This trick is also good if you don't want to pay for a potion to give to the soldier that blends in with his surroundings.
