Darilan is from an aristocratic family, as his father is a noble and advisor to King Harkanian himself. Darilan is now taking up a new path, as he strays away from the molding pressure that his family puts on him. Magic, he persues. He is on the search for a new teacher, eagar to learn new, but not willing to throw his old strengths away. He is struggling between choosing the power of the Goddesses, or power of the essence. Either way he goes, he wants to be a soldier for the kingdom he loves, Hyrule. He strives to protect Hyrule, his family, and everyone who is a lover of justice, prosperity, and patriotism.

Shortly after Darilan's "return" he revealed that his father had been murdered and that he had lost his faith in the Goddesses. He was drawn to Wyndisis, a Zoran Archmage whom he embraced as a new deity. Wyndisis promised him that he would be able to find the people responsible for his father's death and avenge him.

Not long after joining Wyndisis, the Zora offered to make him leader of the Dark Acolytes, second only to Wyndisis himself. It was an offer that Darilan was too afraid to refuse. Darilan, despite being allied with Wyndisis, was still loyal to the Royal Family. Wyndisis knew he had to break that loyalty before Darilan discovered how much his goals and ideals conflicted with those of the Royal Family.

While many of his fellow Adventurers were fighting The High Summoner, Bertram, Darilan met with Wyndisis. The Zora tried to convince Darilan, without supplying hard evidence, that the Hyrulean government conspired to murder his father because they didn't like non-Hylians having as much status as his father did. Darilan didn't believe Wyndisis, and the Zora seemingly goaded him to attack him, which he did. He called out to the Goddesses and asked them to grant him a spell that would end the evil Zora. They complied, but Wyndisis was able to turn the light spell back on Darilan, who was scarred by the magic, losing all the pigment in his hair and most of the pigment in his skin. While he was being burned he had no choice but to reach out for Wyndisis' help again. The damage he sustained was so severe that he would die if he didn't continue to embrace Wyndisis' dark powers.
