Not far south of Lon Lon Ranch, where the dieing Roc shreeks in agony for whatever reason, a stump protrudes through the soil of the South Greens. In the still night, in the darkness of the land's daily slumber, it seems to serve no purpose. A forrester probably chopped it down, and used it to make something useful for adventurers. But that is irrelevant.
This stump serves as a reminder. A reminder of the actions of one Dell Folace, Knight of Hyrule. It was five years earlier, when Hyrule and Calatia had fought a war without weapons and soldiers. It was a war of secrecy, a war in which investigators had been sent to steal private information from the neighboring country. Calatia had learned of a new weapon that was undergoing operation, and decided to duplicate the program for themselves, or else destroy it.
One of the "investigators" was a soldier of Calatia's forces. Blank was sent overseas, at age 18, to take part in the exercise. Lost in Hyrule, he stumbled across an old trench, where a Hylian was laying in wait to terminate the enemy.
A tough battle ensued, leaving both combatants paralyzed, tempoorarily. What could they do? Sleep would ensure perish. Conversation was in order. By the end of the night, Blank and Dell had become good friends, with a lot in common. Paralsys fading, the two decided to let each other live.
A day later, Blank was returning home to Calatia, and he visited the trench before departure. Dell lay dead, torn in half left to right. He had been found out, sparing an enemy. And he was terminated. Blank filled the trench in, and planted a seed. A tree grew, in pace of a tombstone. Blank had returned five years later, a month before today. The tree was gone, in it's place, a stump. It had fallen prey to the same gruesome fate as his friend. Of course, seeing this for the first time after five years brought pain to his heartstrings. He hadn't known Dell Folace very well, but it was the prospect that a friend could be taken away at the most random of times that pained him so.
The inscription was still in place.
It is shaped oddly, and he knows instantly that it was once the holding place for a piece of the Po rune. Jumping gleefully from the stump, finds a note in the small hole.
The miraculous discovery leaves the grunt dumbfounded, moreso than when he had been made fun of by the elderly Zora earlier in his search. Finally, after jotting down the strange verse, he turns to the East, where the moon shines brightly, and marches forward.
That's it! Goodbye, Dell. I have a Rune to find.
Blank departs, and the leaves blow over the grave, as the sun rises for a new day.
