Price Estimate?

So, well, I'm in a bit of a predicament here.

I sell things. Being too young to work, that is how I make my money. I charge for supplies (small amounts, like 2 dollars on pictures) and for labour.

My parents won't let me sell costume masks for less than 60-100 USD... which is ridiculous, there's no need to sell for over 30 or  40 USD to me. /:

The masks cost about 15-20 USD to make.

Plastic Canvas - $0.10 per sheet (about two-three sheets per mask)
Upholstery Foam - $15.00 per sheet (makes a lot of masks)
Fur - $7 a yard, $3 dollars a sheet (for white, brown and black only), $2 for a 30 x 20 in square (one mask needs about half a yard of fur)
Fun Foam - $0.79-$1.00 per sheet (one sheet = lots of eyes)
Balaclava (if used) - $5.00

So... yeah. It takes about 2 hours for the base (plastic canvas) and a few hours for the foaming (depends on the face structure) and the furring time changes. One colour takes like... 30 minutes to an hour.

They look like this when finished:

I don't want to have to charge more than $30 for a mask, but my parents want me to get "at least minimum wage" i.e., 6 dollars an hour. /: AND they don't listen when I say I can make masks quicker than I have been making them. It took me about a month for Wolf Link, mostly due to Halloween plans and drama within the group.

Any suggestions I can get to the price is freaking love. D: (I don't care if I don't make 6 dollars an hour. I do it for fun, otherwise I wouldn't be making them! same with art, I mean, I'd do it for free if markers/pencils weren't 6 USD a piece!)

I'm not quite sure.

Your parents are telling you how to do this?  At the expense of sounding like a bad influence, you shouldn't let them tell you how to run your business.

Fishalicious

Yeah, I don't want them to influence the business... but they own the paypal account and they have to cash my checks, so. >_>

I'm trying to come to a good price with them (I can't use others for a good estimate... they charge 300+ for the head alone)

darkphantomime

When you get the money, guess who's going to start 'taxing' you for it... No, not the government, not the mafias, and not us losers at TDC... Yes, that's right, YOUR FAMILY!

Keaton

I personally would charge more than 30-40, but I would charge less than what your parents are telling you to, even if just to get back at them.

Seriously, if its your business, tell them to get the hell out.

Fishalicious

Yeah, when I'm sixteen, I'm getting my own bank account/paypal and drivers license, and telling them that I'm doing all my own stuff. (mailing, shipping, buying materials, prices, etc.)

But... I'm unfortunately very dependent on them, when it comes to materials and stuff. If I were to be rebellious, they would say "oh, you can't buy ___ at __!" /:

I might sell it at forty, just because it's between 30 (my price) and 60 (parents price)... and 50 would be too close to the family's.

Question - Why do you even need their permission in relation MSRP?

Fishalicious

Because if I say I'm selling it for too cheap, they won't ship it out, or they'll just take the money out of paypal for themselves.  >_> you see, I can't drive, and the post office is at least three miles away. It's kind of hard to walk that far to ship it off. /:
