What Makes Zelda Great - LoZ

For those of you who don't check the mainpage very often, I'm starting up a new series of articles: What Makes Zelda Great. You can read more in detail about it and my reasoning for picking this topic in the mainpage post I made yesterday, but it basically boils down to going through each of the Zelda games and seeing what they did best - what they did better than any other Zelda game and how they did it so well.

So I'm hoping to get some opinions here to use in these articles. We're going to start with LoZ, so let me ask you: what do you love about the original Legend of Zelda? What really stood out to you when you played it, and what did it do better than any other game in the series? What makes the Legend of Zelda great?

It was challenging and innovative-- and I was around for the very start of it.  The fact that it had such a huge overworld to explore really excited me when I first started playing.

I don't even know where to start. I mean, it had so many features in it that had never been achieved before. Save system, for one.

But...man, it was difficult. Real sense of accomplishment when you beat ANY of the dungeons.

And firing magic with the...Fire Rod, is it? That was freaking fun, too. Enemies didn't know what hit them.

LoZ is a unique Zelda experience in that it's one of the few games in the series that you can play with a friend. I mean, you die so much, it's not hard to trade off every other life. And it's simple enough to engage the both of you, as opposed to modern games with all their highfalutin cutscenes and stories and whatnot. Muddles up the good, old-fashioned gameplay.

I've actually done this too. One night long ago with a good friend. Playing Legend of Zelda as a team is just as good as playing Super Mario Bros. together. And again, its difficulty level makes it reasonably fair to trade off. I have yet to do this with any other Zelda game... and sure, Adventure of Link might be just as capable... if it didn't frustrate people ten minutes in.
