I just realised this: One Piece isn't 'owned' by 4KIDS anymore, it's now 'owned' by FUNimation Entertainment, who also 'owns' the many Dragon Ball series. This might make the series better, but judging by the repeated 'Gum Gum...' and the characters craziness and unrealistic-ness, it might not be.

Hopefully, though, it will be a little bit better, if only that. And get more violence. Saddly, this probably won't happen, knowing how the series already is messed up.

Companies like those don't own the shows. They merely own the distribution rights, meaning they can censor or do whatever they see fit... sadly, even to the point where it's no longer recognizable and dishonourable to the creator's intentions.

Viz media doesn't own any of the manga series they publish in america. They only possess the distribution rights, etc, etc...

So the question is: Did 4kids give up their distribution rights to One Piece?

Mysterious F.

Well, probably. One Piece is even more popular than Naruto in Japan and is Shonen's most widely selling manga, but in America it is viewed as terrible for four main reasons:

A) Despite how late it is shown, it still is made like it was fro 6-9 year olds.
B) The complete unrealistic nature of the characters, which is more cartoony than normal for an anime, along with what they constantly say.
C) Completely skipping several story arcs in the English 4KIDS version.
D) Terrible fight and action scenes, among other terrible scene types.

And by 'own', I meant they owned the rights to show it in America.

darkphantomime

Yes well... be happy you  didn't get to see the butchering they did with Escaflowne and Cardcaptors...

Gamefreak

Great, I suddenly realized I miss Cardcaptors.

darkphantomime

Heehee, Why is it that I felt like I was the only one that even knew Cardcaptors existed? Anyway... I'm watching the anime on my computer... and suffice to say, they cut out a LOT in the american version... not exactly sure why though, because a lot of it's pretty innocent... it's a magical girl anime, you see...

No, I watched Cardcaptors a while ago.  Now I miss it again.

MasterKeyX

The oly anime I have evr watched was RuroKen, DBZ when I was little, and i guess Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon can count....

Toonami on CN... yeah, they had some good stuff.

Before they added One Piece, then it fel downhill. And then there's BoBo-Bo-Bo-BoBoBo or whatever.

Bboy94

How much of Yu-yu Hakosho was edited? I feel like it was an awesome show but it got cut because it was too violent for CN. Or maybe that was just because I had to sneak watching it, because I was little and it was slightly violent.  :P

Mysterious F.

Not very violent, actually.

And that had nothing to do with the topic, but mabye you jsut posted in the wrong one. You're looking for Best Anime.

darkphantomime

Nah, this topic is about 4kids and how they see the need to censor everything. His post pretty much deals with what this is about...

Mysterious F.

I found proof of FUNamation gaining rights over One Piece:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_One_Piece_episodes_%28US_edition%29

That's a list of the American Episodes. Compare it to the list of Japanese Episodes:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_One_Piece_episodes

As you can see, they completely changed the series in America.
