Not sure, but I remember it being one of the biggest urban legends of Pokemon Red and Blue.

That and the Mew truck.

The ABDown trick actually worked. It was all in the timing of wht the ball actually hit the pokemon, not capture it. It was tricky. I used, or at least attempted it all the time in Red and Blue.

And what is this said Mew trick?

We don't even know if Mew had anything to do with the truck. It was just a truck that showed up randomly outside the port town of vermilion city.

No trucks, but it's actually a legit way to encounter Mew without using a cheating device. (However, knowing my luck, you already know about it...)
