Hi no Seijin

Well, I'm just going to have to make you feel guilty for joining.
Best.  Cane.  EVER!

You're not really guilty, it's just that any time you tell your parents something important you get VERY nervous. You'll get over it soon.

Congrats for you for being uber smart and not getting in!

No, no, no. I wasn't nervous at all. I was completely, incredibly skeptical. And I have an apparently bad attitude.

But hey, My Ishmael can do that to you. ;)

Well, on the one hand, you MIGHT be forced to do community service. So that's a plus for the college application and crap...

But seeing as how Magz is already going to michigan state... whatevuh

What is this National Honour Society, what do you have to do if you're in it? I don't get it, NHS to me stands for the National Health Service.
It sounds a little like this thing called YG&T we have here, but all you get from that is the ability to got certain Summer Courses. And I'm not gonna waste my Summer learning about dinosaurs. I only accepted because it will look good on my UCAS stuff.

MagmarFire

That's one ulterior motive of joining: looking good on just about every application you're forced to pencil push. And the point of it is that if you've demonstrated "good character, leadership, what have you," you're given the chance to accumulate points from volunteering. If you get enough points, you get to wear a special badge for graduation, as far as I know.

Huh, volunteering to earn points or something... Where have I seen something like that before? Oh, yeah! How about just about every job out there?

Yeah but, can't you at least look on community service as a positive thing? I'm not liking how it's getting a beat down here. ALSO it helps you get scholarships, which you'll need BIG TIME.

Hi no Seijin

Shouldn't community service be, oh, I don't know, voluntary and not, you know, mandatory?  And shouldn't the community deserve the service?

Yeah, I'm a bit of a cynic.

It's not necessarily volunteer work if you're doing it for personal, future capital gain, is it?

THAT'S NOT THE POINT!

One of my friends had well over a thousand hours of community service when she graduated. Yes, it does look good on stuff like that, and yes, it can be used for gain in the future. But what's important is that you contribute something, anything to your own community, regardless of motive.

I wasn't able to do any community service and I'm disappointed because of that... I didn't have anyone who could help me or with whom I could do things with.

Fishalicious

I was supposed to get an NHS form within one day of getting the slip that said LOL YOU'RE QUALIFIED. I then had 1/2 a day to complete it.

There involved a written essay, and I said "LOL NO" and so I'm not in it for the 3rd year in a row.

You're also punished if you don't make it to morning meetings, and I just don't do that, so... :v

It still seems to be the point. I'm sure that for many instances, volunteer work is selfless, which is what many people attribute with volunteer work. However, doing it for the sake of getting a scholarship, which is what is appears the NHS wants me to do, just doesn't seem right to me.

I can still volunteer anytime I want, and I can certainly feel better doing it knowing that no one's expecting me to do it for the sole purpose of getting a scholarship. That's much of what I'm saying.

I agree with Maggy. You should only do community service because you want to, not because you'll get a scholarship, which is an insult to the community.

The National Honors Society is arguably one of the most useless things ever created. College's should accept people only because of education reasons, not because of "good leadership skills", race/sex reasons, money, or whatever. The fact that people even have to stop to think if they're important or not is insulting to humanity as a whole.

darkphantomime

......

But I was emphasizing my friend's selflessness and wanting to do it for herself... aactually agreeing with you.
