The Law of Equivalent Exchange states (and this is a paraphrase) that to gain something, something of equal value must be lost.  If alchemy is used to resurrect a dead person (or, in the comic's case, a dead topic), you can have all of the material components for a human body, but you can't replace the soul, so part of the alchemist's body is lost in the process, and this can result in death, either in the short term or the long run.
