Yeah I put the censoring thingly in as a lark (would have been helpful with SR's recent certain-colored female dog rants) and had no idea that it would pick "swears" out of the middle of words. Bizarre.

Hey, Jack, automatically censoring some words is a good idea, but not if it's in the middle of a word.  Proboards has this feature where it won't censor whole words.  For example, if "hi" was censored and someone wrote "high," it would change to "hellogh."  Maybe this forum has something like it?

I can't change that. The way the forum's censorship script works is that anywehere is sees (to use your example) the letters "h" and "i" together in that order, it replaces htme with what I give it as the "replacement word".

It's really stupid, but as least I can censor the words like "female dog" and "copulate violently" since there are few to no words with them in the middle of them.
