This thread is to help people who might need help in their RP'ing. Feel free to add more tips/rules as they seem needed. I'm going to open this up with:
GOD-MODDING
Basically, I have seen way too much God-Modding, and I want to help people get away from that habit. There has been alot, but it's easy to solve. Some examples--
BAD-- Grenada walks up to the the locked door, and noticing it's locked, throws his weight upon it. This breaks down the door, and he starts looking around at all the wondrous things.
GOOD-- Grenada walks up to the locked door, and noticing it's locked, throws his weight upon the door attempting to open it. Inside he hopes to find wondrous things.
BAD-- Grenada turns to face his foe, looking directly into his eyes, he scares his opponent into paralysis. He slashes, knocking the weapon from his hands. Left defenseless, the enemy can do nothing more than cower.
GOOD-- Grenada turns and begins facing his foe. Looking into his eyes, he gives an angry glare that could paralyze. He slashes at the weapon trying desperately to disarm him, attempting to keep the fight from escalating.
My main advice for those who God-mod often is to remember that you are attempting to do something, you don't know if you succeed. Plus you only know what your character is thinking or doing. Remember that, and you will do fine.
If you feel you need more help than this, you can post here, and I'll help you.

Great idea, Grenada!
And sure, Julian. Same for spells and talents, even for the ones that seem surefire. For example...
Bad-- "Arco tears through the wall like a boiling sword through chuchu jelly, soon making short work of it. Within a minute the wall falls down and Arco steps through."
Good--"Arco raises an arm and brings it down as hard as he can on the wall, causing pebbles and assorted debris to fly. He continues to dig through it as sweat accumulates on his forehead."
The way I like to put it is: "Don't assume anything." Always leave an out for the narrator, whoever that may be (generally Narrator, or the GM of a quest, or the person who started a quest). Mild "god-modding" is alright in very, very small measures, e.g.:
"Arco waves to the Goron and, seeing the sweat on the latter's brow, tosses him a skin of water."
But even this sort of subtle "assumation" should never be tried with a real player's character. People tend to get pretty miffed if you control their character.

o.k.
Lets say hypothetically. A man is unconcious one the floor of a bar. Can i say that 'The zora grabed the legs of the unconcious man, one leg with each hand, and dragged him out of the bar' or would i say ' The zora grabbed the legs of the unconcious man and attempted to rag him out of the bar' and then just wait for the narrator to say that i succeeded in draging the man out?

You're getting the idea, Julian. With your latter example (with "attempted"), Narrator (or whoever) could say:
As Julian reaches for the man's legs, his eyes snap open and he kicks wildly at the Zora.
(Thus providing leg room, aha, for the GM/Narrator to have their character not be dragged out of the room).
In fact, better yet:
"I'd better get this body out of here," thinks Julian, as he reaches out to grab the man's legs."
See the slight difference?

Ok, here's the big one... the one we've all been waiting for. A little bit of searching via Google cache has found what we all thought was lost...
Ladies and Gentlemen, friends old and new, RP'ers everywhere... all rise. Hear now the words of William "Arthur Dent" Givens, former Archmage of Hyrule.
(Aside) This thread exists to help foster better posting. Certain rules of posting etiquette seem to be violated almost constantly by members of the REF. Please review the information presented here. These rules are subject to editing at any time.
1. Please remember to label your out-of-character posts by placing one of the following at the start of your posts:
OOC: This prefix denotes that you are speaking out-of-character, and thus you may speak of topics outside of the Hyrulian scope.
(Aside): This prefix denotes that you are speaking as your Earth self, not your Hyrulian self. Therefore, you may speak of topics outside of the Hyrulian scope.
Unless you have one of these two items at the start of a post, or switch to one of them mid-post, please do not include information about matters that do not directly bear on your character's perceptions of Hyrule. For example, unless you can find a logical reason for your character to know too much about Hyrulian history, confine talking about other Legend of Zelda games to posts marked as noted above. For example, Arthur has a book called the Lexicon Adventurae Hyruliarum, the Dictionary of Hyrulian Adventures, that details several old legends, including information on OoT, MM, ALttP, Oracle, FSA, and LA, giving him the right to talk about topics in those games. He believes that the events related in the legends might have taken place, but cannot be sure, and I have written his posts conveying that attitude of slight skepticism. LoZ took place a year ago, so we can all reference the general story of that with no problem.
2. Please recall your English grammar. Avoid making errors such as improper grammar or capitalization whenever possible. (Shouting) CAPITALIZE THE FIRST LETTER AT THE START OF EACH SENTENCE! (Normal speech) This is so that everyone can clearly understand what you post.
3. Please do not use AIM slang such as "lol," "ttyl," or similar, even if you are involved in a Quest on AIM. Hyrulians wouldn't know the meaning of such terms, and this RPG is supposed to be at least semi-serious. This is not AIM. Also, please do not use forums as places for AIM-style conversations.
4. Avoid multi-posting on a topic whenever possible unless all of your posts on that topic are relevant. This is one of the Narrator's pet peeves, and it does tend to irritate the rest of us a little.
5. DO NOT RESORT TO EXCESSIVE VULGARITY UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES WHATSOEVER! Using excessive amounts of profane words has caused one participant in the RPG (who I shall not name here) to be permanently kicked out of Hyrule. You can use some swearing, but keep it mild, such as "d**n" or some such. You can also use nonsensical symbols to stand in for profanity. If you use excessive vulgarity, the Narrator and others, myself included, will become extremely angry.
6. Unless you note parenthetically (within parentheses) that your character is shouting, please do not type anything with every letter capitalized. The first sentence in Rule 5, above, is an exception because I am trying to reinforce an important point.
7. Please do not end sentences with more than two exclamation points. Even a second exclamation point is rather sloppy-looking, and beyond that, it is rather juvenile.
8. Please do not seriously insult another REFer. We're supposed to be one big, happy family. Some squabbling is okay, but when taken to excess, it makes everyone mad.
9. If you fill up a topic with mindless chatter, please make sure it is at a topic marked as an inn or tavern. That way, the important extra-tavern topics are clear for all of us.
10. If you are talking to one character and start talking to a different character, please note this. For example, if I were talking to Wyndisis and I started talking to Ronin, I'd mark (To Ronin) before the first sentence where I was talking to Ronin.
11. The "Destinations" threads at certain locations, mainly towns, are not free-for-all topics for discussion. Please avoid posting in them if at all possible.
12. Make sure you note character actions as being separate from character speech in some way. Separate actions from speech by a line, italicize the actions, put the actions in parentheses, or do whatever you want to make sure we're clear about what you're saying versus what you're doing.
13. When you create a poll, please try to keep its composition kosher--that means no posts on who Link from OoT would marry, nothing that insults anyone in the REF, especially the Narrator, and so forth. Post about topics that are relevant to the RPG's ongoing course.
You are all welcome to comment on this topic. I am trying to help the Narrator out by posting this topic at North Castle Courtyard. Thank you for your patience in reading this. (To Narrator) If you think this topic is a bit much, you are of course welcome to banish it to the dungeon.
William Givens/Arthur Dent
There you have it. There were additional rules that were added on in later posts of the thread, but those are a little harder to find (rules 14-19). But we can add on just like before, if certain habits start cropping up (e.g. "parroting"). And yes, there are some things that are different now (e.g. "Destinations -> "Traveling within the Castle"), but I'm sure we can figure it out. No doubt that if we can all take a moment to read this again or for the first time, Hyrule will be that much of a better place to live in. Thanks!

I don't know how I missed this at first, but yay, the rules.
Using the same cache, I may have found his e-mail!
wpgivens@ameritech.net
I hope he hasn't changed it, and that he's still interested. But for now, this is good news... 12:30... time for sleep.
Edit-- Sent the email this morning. No reply as of yet.

Ah! Most excellent. Thanks for finding that, I was unable to myself, when I did some "William Givens" searching and stuff. Anyway, looking forward to seeing what happens.
Edit: Hooray! Look who's here!

(Aside) Thank you one and all for reproducing the first thirteen items on that list! I am very touched that you thought my rules worthy of inclusion. Of course, I am following all of my own rules.
(Arthur) Cousin Archmage would be pleased to note that his advice on proper conversational etiquette is still being followed in the Kingdom. Alas and alack, his book on the history of Hyrule is his personal property, his pride and joy, and he will not part with it for any amount of Rupees. Oh well...

It occurs to me that this would go great in the New Members section. So, I hereby move it.

But there is also this thing that whenever you start a story that does not include your PC, some RPers start narrating in second person mode, like this:
You enter the bar, and as you do so you can see two men fighting on the floor

That's alright. That isn't god-moding. It is, though, once someone's replied to it, and the narrator says, "Then you go over and do something", along those lines. That is God-Moding.
