Oh, okay.
To MajoraKirby, I know. I mean, I'm Agnostic, so religion isn't a big problem for me, but how we have the "One nation, under God" in our pledge seems kind of...incorrect. There are alot of monotheistic religions (in America), but just because the majority of these religions are monotheistic and their god is male, doesn't mean that other religions that are polytheistic don't count. What about Hinduism? They have more than one god. The way I see it, religion and politics should be separate. And the Pledge of Allegiance falls more into the politics side. So I don't think "God" should be mentioned in it.
I too am Agnostic. I used to have issues with religion and I would convert several times, i.e. I was once a Buddhist.
I actually recall reading somewhere that it was not always "one nation under god". And that at one point it was something like "One nation, united together" but was changed somewhere in history.

I also have converted a couple times, too.

And to Gamefreak, true, it won't warp their minds, but how does it fall into freedom of speech? Why don't we just have it the old way when it was "united together"? That way, it's non-religious but still gets out the same message. I'm not saying that I think it will "warp people's minds", my no. Just saying that it seems incorrect to put something that seems more suited for a prayer than in a patriotic pledge.

Takun

I never understood why we couldn't talk about religion in class yet every morning we are forced to say he is the ruler of our nation.
This is actually very off topic, Im sorry.

But anywho where did you see the ad at? Like what website?

The reason the phrase "one nation, under God" is in the Pledge of Allegiance is because that's just how America was founded: "one nation under God." However, even though it was founded this way, it was also founded as a nation where you are free to worship in any way you see fit, or not at all. You're not bound to worship any one god or multiple gods just because the words "one nation, under God" are in the Pledge of Allegiance.
What, you expect me to say something witty?

Commodore Axilon

"Under God" wasn't added to the Pledge until 1954, when we were at war with the "godless communists".

Good point. And thank you for the date and reason Commodore.

True, but I agree with MajoraKirby, this may be getting a little off-topic. We better get back on before this gets moved to the Chatboard.

I'm afraid I've gotta comment a little further though.

You know, I find it funny when people try to make the argument of the 'separation of church and state' clause warped by conservatives to go with 'the context of the times', which doesn't really make any sense. People go about on that to try to make it look like 'oh, america was religious at the time, even the founding fathers were religious'. But they don't know the personality, views, or opinions of the man that wrote the Bill of Rights: Thomas Jefferson. He was a very strong proponent of the seperation of church and state, and when he states it so clearly and concisely at the first amendment, it's just... retarded that some people would distort the meaning and intent of his words, his viewpoints to suit their own.

MasterKeyX

This isn't a religious debate topic, it's a topic about that ad. All of this is off topic, so let's get back on topic.

Reply to JQ:I have to agree with you. I'm tired of hearing "This was a Christian nation when it began!" (You mean the Christian nation that brought witch burning over from Europe!?) and "Our founding fathers were Christian!" Who cares what religion they were? This was intended to be a country where you could worship how you pleased or not worship at all.

(Okay, I probably look totally hypocritical by not getting back on-topic. Let's just move this to the Chatboard...  ;))

MasterKeyX

:P Or a mod can change the title so we can debate religion.

For the record, I could post about all this, but I don't feel like getting attacked for my views. So I won't.

Nah, I feel that this debate is too good to move to the chaos over in chatboard.

Takun

I disagree. We just need to get back on topic. No moving required. So where DID you see the ad?

In all honesty, I don't see why we'd really have a problem with changing "under god" to something else, because we'd have to keep changing to keep people happy, which is... well, impossible.

We also have God's name on our money, but I don't think anyone wants to complain about that.

MasterKeyX

I don't quite recall. I was just surfing about.... don't remember the site.
