This time, I chose Ran, by Kurosawa. It is basically a samurai retelling of King Lear, though is much more psychological in nature, and told through stunning battle scenes.

And here I thought you were strictly anti-violence.

Hi no Seijin

He's okay with violence if it has meaning behind it.  That's more or less what he told me when I pointed out that one of his favorite movies had violent scenes in it.

To be more specific, I'm okay with violence when it tells me something about violence and/or violence's relationship to both the world and/or film.

Hi no Seijin

Violence tells you that violence is violent.

I think you broke Shika Whocares.

I could find an automechanic that could fix him quickly.

So this time, I chose a Chaplin film, and a talkie no less. It's Monsieur Verdoux, which he made after satirizing Hitler with The Great Dictator. Completely abandoning his Tramp character, this time Chaplin plays a Frenchman during the Depression who, after losing his job, marries and kills rich women to support his family. Dark, sophisticated, politically minded, and very, very funny.
