I think Vader is just happy/surprised that the stormtrooper remembered his birthday.  If there is any deeper meaning to it than that, it flew over my head.

And I thought it was that too, or that the Stormtrooper was the intruder.

None of the Stormtroopers know Vader's birthday.  When he was made from Anakin to Vader, he lost who he was.  He stopped being human and became a monster.  The last Stormtrooper was the impostor, and wished Vader a happy birthday.  This threw Vader for a loop.  Maybe he knew who the impostor was, maybe not.  Vader didn't kill the impostor or even capture them because he was too stunned to act, perhaps lost in remembrance.

He probably even forgot what his birthday was, or that he ever had one.

He's long dead now.

It's obvious the second movie took place somewhere between the 1950s-1970s.

IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW!

Play the song of time, alex.

OK so remember on another forum I argued that Star Wars must have happened because it takes light a long time to travel a long distance.  Well consider that THESE STARS were taken by the HUBBLE TELESCOPE and they are in a similar conformation as shown in a spot of space in Return of the Jedi behind Endor.  I precisely measured the distances from star to star DON'T ARGUE WITH ME!  I truly believe the Force is calling me to go back in time and save the Star Wars galaxy from endless peril.

The Glamour Nazi

So it was from the 50s-70s....
