So I've heard, yet it seems like nobody so far can provide a good comparison between the two...

Perhaps if I had the opportunity to try them back to back, I could see for myself if there's a real difference, but as it is my family generally sticks with one or the other for weeks at a time, offering no chance for that.

What you should try, though, is chocolate milk and root beer mixed together.  It is awesome.

That has to be one of the most interesting-sounding drinks I've ever heard of. I'll have to remember this next time I have both of those lying around.
