SOPA and PIPA have been "postponed?" Yes!
I recently heard the news myself :)
That's quite a relief. I suppose it's more like "The Imprisoned" now. A temporary solution to a future problem. Whatever the case, I'm just grateful to hear some good news on the subject.

I thought they got a new domain name.

Nope, the website has been seized by the Federal Government and the founder has supposedly been jailed.

Keaton

Also, SOPA and PIPA were just the beginning.  You should check out ACTA.

MagmarFire

I'm not that worried about ACTA right now, I don't think. It's a trade agreement, and doesn't that mean it'll require some kind of appointed body to enforce its laws? Isn't that just a little bit hard to do here when there are multiple keepers of the terms?

...Then what the crap is the point of even trying to pass legislation of SOPA and PIPA if they can already exercise power to do that kind of stuff anyway!?

SOPA would allow them to sue foreign-based websites that pirate American material. There are other reasons, of course, but that's the big'un.

MagmarFire

Really? I thought it would only allow suing of domestic sites that engage in piracy and force ISPs to "merely" block foreign sites that infringe. ...I'm not even sure if international lawsuits even exist, and if they do, aren't they between country-specific branches of the participating companies?

Quoted for truth.

It's true, Maggs. It's kind of like, "Well who put the United States in charge of the internet?"

The United States did. ::)

MagmarFire

Well, the Internet did originate in the U.S., so in a way, that makes sense.

...But then by that logic, the Chinese should be in charge of ice cream and fireworks and gunpowder.

Not sure if you guys heard of the new bill going through Congress, feared by many to be SOPA's second wind: CISPA.

Get some more toilet paper...

Oh Congress, why do you do this?

Twilight Wolf

Because even though SOPA may be dead, the people who tried to push it through still have their same jobs and there's too much money for them at stake for them to NOT keep trying until some mutation of it passes.

This is why we can't have nice things.
What, you expect me to say something witty?

I say that all the time :P

Also, it doesn't surprise me. I never for a moment figured that they'd just give up.
