thats a very good point, HNS. You shouldnt hate a person cause of their clothes.

Hi no Seijin

Well, it's not really my point.  MagmarFire was the one who actually pointed it out.  I just asked a different question.

You guys are only basing this on clothes and looks, aren't you?

Tingle kidnapped David Jr. and forced him and Tingle's brother Ankle to do slave work. Also, he took his other brother's , Knuckle, greatest creation, Tingle Tower. This forced Knuckle into exile.

Hi no Seijin

It can't really be exile if Knuckle ran away, now is it?  Also, they could escape at any time they want to; there's really nothing holding them back.  So the fact that they haven't ran away shows that deep down they care for Tingle, so there must be some good they see in him.  Also, Ankle is more responsible and hardworking than Knuckle, so Ankle probably doesn't mind pushing that tower as much as the others.

And if you remember, I've already went on spiels where I covered everything from how he looks to his brothers.  If you want proof that I have done so, then here; read Episode 1 and 4.

Finally, you guys are only looking at the surface, aren't you?  Why don't you look a bit deeper?  Is it going to hurt you to put any more thought into it?

Okay I don't hate Tingle but here's my thoughts on him. He's nuts and fairy obsessed, Ankle feels bad for him and stays at tingle tower, David Jr. is a victim to tingles insanity and is stuck on the isle, and knuckle is too lazy to try and get tingle tower back.

LadyNintendo

Why're we only talking about TWW Tingle here?

MM Tingle is great, and I'm happy for him that he was able to fulfill his dreams.

TWW Tingle is a little strange, but shows the same talents MM Tingle was gifted with. For the right price (and why not? If he's with Link, he can't make money by selling/translating charts), he even helps Link. I don't think anymore that he forces his brothers to do anything. Knuckle seems to be a lot stronger than Tingle, so if Tingle Tower was really stolen from him, why didn't he just demanded it back? Tingle seemed a bit scared of him. And why would he have made golden statues of his brother and still love his creations if Tingle truly was a thief? Ankle seems to be the most caring of the four. He seems to care deeply about his brothers' well-being to a point he doesn't care that much about his own feelings anymore. He does seem to imply at one point that Tingle isn't always the happy guy we know, but I have no idea how he behaves then. David Jr. could always leave if he wanted to. Before you say there is no boat or anything that could be used as one, there's a mailbox at Tingle Island. He could always ask for help in a letter or ask the Rito postman. I could think of a few reasons why he might not want to leave.

TMC Tingle is okay. He seems to get along well with the other three.

FSA Tingle is........different. The messages from him gave me quite a laugh, but also gave me the idea his mind is too childish to comprehend what's truly going on. You can't blame him for that. As for stealing Force Gems, like I said, I don't think he's able to comprehend how important they are for Link. On the other hand, maybe he does. He wants them to become a Fairy after all an Fairies always help Link. And even apart from that, there are more than enough Force Gems in the game. Not to mention the ability of teh Four sword to go back in time if you couldn't get enough during the adventure.

Hi no Seijin

Very excellent points, LadyNintendo.  And to answer your question, the issue about clothing takes care of all the Tingles, and Whocares was attacking TWW Tingle, so it was TWW Tingle I defended.

You do look deap into the center of things!

But going too deep will just get you back on the surface, but not of facts and true points, but of pure opinions and guesses.

Also, Lady Nintendo, you forgot the fact Tingle has a picture of a cobra on his back.

Still, it's actually better to stay in the surfacy areas in most cases, including now. I agree, deep down made some interesting points, but it was what was found in the letters in the Tower of the Gods that interests us. You can only get them with Tingle's help, and they explain Tingle's past. I haven't read them at all, so someone please tell me or find a site that does! But I do know that if you haven't read them, you should read them and realize other things already.

Tingle is weird, but i dont really despise him. Hes rather comical, actually. Weird, but comical. ;D

Just because he has a cobra on his back doesn't make him evil.  Snakes are not even evil.  Snakes and other creatures have been labeled as evil because way back then people knew nothing about them, and people have a tendency to fear the unknown.  The cobra may have been put there because the Japanese knew that he was misjudged elsewhere and wanted to symbolize that.  The only problem was that a lot of people tend to use stereotypes because people are often to lazy to observe the world around them.

QuoteStill, it's actually better to stay in the surfacy areas in most cases, including now.
So if you were being unfairly judged, you would want people to only look at the surface?  Asides from the fact that Tingle is a video game character, what makes him any different than anyone else?  He's human also and has human feelings.

Quote...but it was what was found in the letters in the Tower of the Gods that interests us. You can only get them with Tingle's help, and they explain Tingle's past. I don't know what you mean by these letters, and the only person who was online as I'm typing this don't remember them.  If you can provide proof of these letters, then I'll look at them.

Even if Tingle had a rough past, that doesn't make him evil.  Everyone has rough times, but everyone's not evil.  Tingle isn't even evil.  You're just using the fact that he has a cobra on his back and that his brothers and someone who was shipwrecked on his island turns a statue around all day against him.

So going back to the whole kidnapping David Jr. thing, he was shipwrecked on Tingle Island.  Tingle did nothing to him aside from taking him in and clothing him.  Because, hey, it's entirely possible for David Jr. to have lost some clothing during the storm or whatever shipwrecked him.  Actually, I don't think he was shipwrecked.  I think it was that he got seasick and landed on Tingle Island in a daze.  Either way, his clothes could've been ruined beyond repair, and Tingle clothed him in most likely the only clothing he had.  Sure, David Jr. may express regret, but there's still the fact that he's still on Tingle Island.  Like LadyNintendo said, "David Jr. could always leave if he wanted to. Before you say there is no boat or anything that could be used as one, there's a mailbox at Tingle Island. He could always ask for help in a letter or ask the Rito postman. I could think of a few reasons why he might not want to leave."  And one of those reasons why David Jr. didn't leave Tingle Island because he was grateful that Tingle did save him.

Or it could be because he wants to be an adventurer (find the ghost ship). Since Tingle is the map/chart expert of wherever he is at that moment (in this case, Hyrule), he might hope to come across interesting charts or get valuable information. We know there's a chart to find the ghost ship, possibly David Jr. knows that too and hopes Tingle can help. Or it could be because (well, let's face it), he's not the best looking guy out there according to our standards and likely according to Hyrule's standards. Just like people in our world find support in others with the same "flaws", David Jr. might've been very happy to find people just like him.

Text of Tingle Tower:
"It is said that long ago, a boy garbed in green known as the Hero of Time saved this land. However, on a certain island, there is also a story of the fairy who saved that hero...
It is said that the Hero of Time met the fairy in the midst of his travels. The fairy appeared before the Hero, who had found himself lost in darkness. With a strange power, it would float in midair, dancing above his head like a burst balloon.
After the fairy handed the lost Hero a map, it flew off as quickly as it had appeared. Better able to foresee places of danger than the Hero, the fairy marked them on a map. The Legend goes on to say the quest of the Hero of Time was saved by this plump figure...
Fairies live for thousands of years... but this odd fairy was a bit different. This mystical fairy was born near a lake, and when he met the Hero, he was but 35. Beyond that, there is little known about that fairy...
The Little-Known Legend of the Fairy's 35th Birthday:
On one island, they celebrate one's 35th birthday with a green coat and red pants. They do this in the hope of becoming like the legendary fairy, Tingle!"

Oh yeah, this definetely proves Tingle is an evil jerk. :)

Snakes in Asia:
Kikko Park is also home to a sanctuary for white snakes. These snakes are found only in Iwakuni, and have been designated as special national treasures by the Japanese government. The white snake is a symbol of Benten, the Japanese goddess of wealth. The white snake is considered a sign of good luck in Japan.

India is often called the land of snakes and is steeped in tradition regarding snakes. Snakes are worshipped as gods even today with many women pouring milk on snake pits (despite snakes' aversion for milk). The cobra is seen on the neck of Shiva and Vishnu is depicted often as sleeping only on a 7 headed snake. There are also several temples in India solely for cobras sometimes called Nagraj (King of Snakes) and it is believed that snakes are symbols of fertility. There is a Hindu festival called Nagpanchami each year on which day snakes are venerated and prayed to.

I'm not gonna try to find more. It's just that the western world usually is far more negative about snakes than the the eastern. Yes, they also have negative explanations for the snake symbol. But did you know in Chinese tradition, the snake is related to (decendants (?)) dragons, who are the symbol of royalty and divinity? Even the western world is sometimes positive about snakes. Like the symbol for doctors and hospitals.

Mysterious F.

Well, it is possible that the snake was only put on the American/European versions, seeing as most fans of Zelda in these areas don't like Tingle. Cultures there believed that snakes were signs of evil, and a rainbow would be the predictament of a snake attack nearby. Well, it makes some sense.

Also, people feed milk to snakes to make them go away. Also, the Hindu religion does believe that the dead will be reincarnated (alot of the time they believe as a cattle), but I don't think it says something about snakes. Also, if they love snakes, why would they get pet mongooses to kill them when they enter their houses?

Also, both of you missed two parts in my last post

For Hi no: I agree, deep down made some interesting points.

For LadyNintendo: I haven't read them at all

LadyNintendo

I have read that part, but then, could you explain what the whole part about the message in Tingle Tower was about? What were you trying to say about it being intersting and making us realize other things? It doesn't say anything about Tingle's intentions, only MM Tingle's story.

I believe it says you reincarnate in whatever you've proven to be worth in your former life. I don't know the value of a snakeform according to the Hindu religion. Also, just because you worship (not love per se)something, that doesn't mean you can't be afraid of it. Every religion with multiple gods and spirits has some that both are worshipped and feared. Snakes in temples are okay, because you expect them to be around and can be careful. But for pure safety reasons, you don't want them in your house.

Anyway, we're talking about to much about the symbolism and cultural position of snakes. Fact is that Nintendo and Japan love Tingle and do not understand why we don't love him. So why would the snake mean anything bad? I'm pretty sure it wasn't added just for us Americans and Europeans. After all, none of us really knows what to think of it.

QuoteAnd the Romans looked down upon wearing pants. They considered it barbaric and gay.

That's how much the world can change in 2000 years! :-* But weren't the Romans into gay stuff? I think they viewed it as normal, like the Greeks.

You know, I have a change of heart, Im beganing to like tinker, I mean tingle. ;D He's not so bad now that you mention it...
