You go right ahead an think that(your oppinion on Sephiroth), I'm sure there are many people in this world who think that Sephiroth is a good villian. There are probably over thirty thriving websites devoted to him.

Actually, that's proof he's overrated. He has tons of fangirls and fanboys who think he could do anything. He's like Chuck Norris. THAT is overrated.

Zant is NOT overrated. Nobody runs around yelling 'Zant iz 1337est!'

Does having fans make something overrated? If so, they are both overrated. Alot of villians are that were nominated.

Well, I do. Just because I personally think he's totally awesome. I choose him over Sephiroth, but that's just personal opinion. Everyone's overrated to someone. :3

Oh, and I also nominate Doopliss from Paper Mario II. He was pretty sweet.

yo GF, on the nominations for ganon, it's the member not the character

This topic is actually quite interesting, I don't want it to die yet.

Also.....

QuoteHah, the 'true villain'... You know, to me, what constitutes the real villain, IE: The one that puts a face on the opposite side of the conflict would be the one that appears and has the most development. The King, I doubt you would really be able to respect, because I doubt he had much development, time in the spotlight.

The 'master' behind the shadows means little if his motives and character don't get the chance to develop, so when he shows up late in a work, we already identify the main villain with the one we've been able to get most out of. IE: Darth Vader as apposed to Palpatine of the original Star Wars Trilogy.

You actually haven't heard of the series, so you have little idea about him. King (and King is credited as his name, as there is no official name for him) is the true villain of the series, having warped the minds of Phantom (the no. 1 Knight) and Diana (the Queen), being the true ruler of the Chess Pieces (an evil organization trying to take over MAR Heaven), and far outclassing the Chess Piece Knights (the highest rank under Queen and King) and most of the protagonists. (Only two of them stand an actual chance against him)

And the reason King doesn't get as much screentime as either Diana or Phantom because only two people so much as know about his identity, Diana and himself, and he sees no need for doing anything as long as Phantom is still believed to be the leader of the Chess Pieces. (Few people know about Diana and King's rank as King and Queen) Once Phantom was defeated, however, he revealed himself and killed almost all of the main protagonists, several of their allies, and all but a handful of Chess Pieces ranked below Knight Class, although most of them were revived after his defeat. Compared to most of the characters in the series, he actually is an extremely in-depth character.

I pick Dante from Fullmetal Alchemist or any of the Homonculi- probably Lust though.

???You've gotta be kidding....Seymour was one of the worst....

Anyways, I don't really have a favorite villain, they all seem so generic and similar...It's hard to find one that stands out...I suppose Saruman would be okay..

Seymour had THE most annoying voice I've ever heard in a villain (except for ones that were attempting to sound strange or annoying, they were actually trying to make him seem evil) THE worst hairstyle and character design, and THE worst aura of evilness. He was more pathetic than intimidating and evil.

In that case, the characters of MAR must be pretty freakin' weak if one of the 'strongest' with development is the final boss and head of the organization that doesn't get screen time or anything. You just proved yourself that he wasn't the face people identified with the villainry, being revealed so late.

In the end, King is like all other ill-contrived 'final bosses' whose motivations and whatever get no development and the point comes out quite tasteless. It is the truth of many other works, not just MAR. I'm making a point on what people make as a psychological link to the face of evil, because chances are, they won't go with someone that's revealed practically at the last minute.

................. Courtesies of Commodore:

Seriously, you only half paid attention to what I said. I never said that all of the characters of MAR are weak, most of the Knights have the power to destroy entire cities single-handedly, although Rapunzel is an obvious exception. I never said he didn't get any screen-time, in fact I DID say he got screen-time. In fact, just about half of the characters only show up for one battle, mabye two, and then disappear to never have any more importance or to even not be shown again. The only truly developed characters are:

Both the manga and the anime: all 8 members of Team MAR, Phantom, Halloween, Rolan, and Ian.
Considering the expanded anime: Ash, Loco,  the Princess of Reginlief, and Candice
To an extent developed: King, Diana, Peta, Rapunzel, Pano, Chaton, and Gido

So they you have it, 12 in the manga, 16 in the anime, and another 7 not quite developed yet in both, mostly due to a lack of appearances. Six of the Knights can only be considered developed because they have the rank Knight, and King and Queen, although they have alot of information, only make one or two appearances that actually matter to them as a character. Pano, Chaton, and Gido develope quite nicely considering how they are not Knights or Team MAR members, but still are just barely not developed.

And he wasn't revealed late in the series, more like about volume 3 (although two of the main characters remained oblivious to this until volume 9), his identity wasn't revealed until late in the series. (And his identity was definetly a bigger surprise than there being a King) And his motivations come along nicely too, as it developes bit by bit as the series progresses.
