You would have to look in the area the non-shiny Pokemon would appear in.  If you can't find a Gyarados in tall grass, why would you find a shiny Gyarados in tall grass?

But yes, TP zelda, and i was kidding, with my luck i could breed an army of ponytas that are shiny, as roy, i used to txt him every time i got a shiny, he'd get like 5 txts a day
