Is it a problem that I'm not excited about it, that I don't get "nationally recognized" in an organization that I haven't heard of before last year? That I don't help people in ways that "count"? That apparently I'm going to Hell and rue if I don't go through with it?

Seriously, I don't really think things like this matter, but for some reason, people put emphasis on things including the later years of school, which are used merely for spending time.

Sorry, something weird has been happening these past few days.

Most people don't become aware of NHS until their Sophomore/Junior year.  That said, I went and achieved in my own special way:

Not doing much homework, yet acing all the tests, passing the classes with C's and B's.  Even with that, I managed to get into some prestigious groups.

Oh, no one did. It's just that people seem to think that joining it is "the right thing to do," and that if you don't want to, you only care about yourself. My mom (ONCE AGAIN, may I add?) used the "You only care about those games!" card to justify my skepticism, that I only care about those things and nothing else--or, in other words, that I'm selfish. I can't say that I blame her, since in many ways, I am selfish. Therefore, she obviously made me feel guilty, but for some reason, being guilty is not an optimum trait for an NHS member to have. Am I the only one smelling a Catch-22 here?

Huh! Another counterexample to her advocation that almost everyone has heard of it! XD

It's more like a thing I'm incredibly skeptical of rather than not being a good thing. At the very least, I think it's something that just doesn't matter. In the end, it's just an earthly thing that will be whisked away for when God restores the world.

Don't misunderstand me, though, guys: I don't want people to suffer. (Seriously, you should've seen me when I saw The War of the Worlds...) I'm certainly not against helping others; I'm only against being expected to do so and not doing it my way...or something like that.

Unfortunately, it's made me realize how much of a complete #@%Q!#% and awful person I can be.

Earlier this year, we recieved a paper from a guest from the NHS asking us why we want to join, and what we plan on doing and stuff like that. I just put "I don't want to join." and didn't do the rest. I have no interest in the NHS at all, and I hate being in the spotlight.

Yeah, it is pretty pointless. During my 2 and a half years there, we did absolutely JACK! Just a waste of time, really. meetings once a month that last an hour or two, bla-bla-blah-blah, did you contribute anything?

Oh well, got an extra set of tassles for it during graduation.

If you don't want to go, then don't go.  It's not a requirement for life, like food and video games are.  Er, I mean, food and air. >>

Also, Whocares, being in the NHS doesn't necessarily put you in the spotlight.

You forgot how, whenever you get any honor, parents immediately bring every relative to the house to celebrate the honor, even though they know it's uncomfortable for the child.

Hpefully, Maggy, you won't succumb to any of your parents' tricks to get you in. Keep telling yourself you won't go. Eventually they'll give up.
