They're probably a secondary sexual feature like on mammals-- competition and whatnot.

Besides, it's possible that Zoras are a sort of hybrid between mammals and icthys.
For the hell of it, I came up with classifications and scientific names for Hyrulean races.  Want me to post them up in the General Zelda board?

Oh, yeah, I made the "Fun with Microphones" topic a while back.  I posted a sound file of me doing a really bad impression of Towelie from South Park.  I bet it's gone now.  Probably a good thing. XD
