Legend of Zelda: The Twilight Princess
Oddities & Easter Eggs
WARNING! If you have not completed the game yet, please note this page contains spoilers and will ruin key plot developments for you. Avoid this at your own risk!
The oddities page has been a common staple for TDC's game guides since time immemorial, where players can submit interesting Easter Eggs, mysteries, and other factoids that induce head scratchings of all degrees and severities. Below you'll find many of these puzzlement-inducers from Twilight Princess. If you would like to submit and oddity of your own, email it to Jack.
Vaati's Cameo
On the many doors of the City in the Sky, there is a symbol of a lone eye with what appears to be a few tentacles sprouting from it. This seems to be an homage
to Vaati, the sky-loving, Palace of Winds-inhabiting, villain of the Four Swords series.
The Wind Waker Hylian Grave
This item can also be seen in this ZeldaBlog post I've wrriten. In Kakariko Graveyard and the Hyrule Castle cemetery, on all the graves, there is the same writing in the Hylian script of the Wind Waker. Below is a picture I took, clarified and turned to grayscale to emphasize the script:
The writing is a bit fuzzy but I believe it is transcribed as the characters for HEIGEN NO TAMI NI KUWAETE (the appropriate characters are to the right. In English, unfortunately I'm stumped concerning the last two words. The first three "Heigen no tami" clearly translate as "People of the plain". Where I'm lost is with the last two words. "Ni" can means a multitude of things: "Red (or Red Earth)", "mother of", "two", or "cargo", so that's a bit murky. And, I have no idea what "Kuwaete" means.![]()

Nevertheless, despite my inability to translate, it appears we've seen this phrase before. In this particular image from the introduction to the Wind Waker, the following line is written:
An exact match! But, what does that mean? You can consult this translation by the intrepid Hylian scholars Zethar and Mak for a translation of the image that the line comes from, but other than "the people of the plains," I'm not entirely sure what the other two words directly means (or even if they form a coherent sentence).
It's a nice easter egg, and a bewildering example of "back to the future," but does it actually mean anything substantive?
If you have any theories or thoughts concerning the Hylian on the grave (let's just overlook that a script from a game that takes place later in the timeline appears in this one) then please email the webmaster.
A Fishy Family Tree
(Submitted by Psy)Go into Hena's fishing hut and on the wall with the pictures, look at the very left picture, nearest Hena. It's the guy who owns the Lake Hylia fishing hut in OoT holding a Hylian Loach.
Hena says something about how she MAY (she uses all caps) be related to him, but that she couldn't prove it, and it's just wishful thinking. Then she says "The Legendary Hyrulian Master Fisherman... Wish I could've been born in that era."
I also suppose I should mention that if you talk to Hena (not sure if it will happen before you look at the picture, because I looked at it before I talked to her), she will say something about randomly getting itchy all the time, and will proceed to scratch her back every now and thenevidence that she may in fact be related to him.
Something On His Sleeve
Fyer, the corpulent clown that operates the Cannon house on Lake Hylia, has a print of Bullet Bill on his shirt sleeve. How appropriate!
Greetings from Sunny...
Two billboards in the Hidden Village each say "Welcome to Old Kakariko". Now, by "Old", do the Sheikah mean this is the Kakariko of OoT, or, more likely, their own "private" Kakariko, free from the rabble of the Hylians who were invited to settle in the "new" Kakariko.
Gossip Has It
The Howling Stones bear the Sheikah "tear drop" symbol on them, making them bear a remarkable resemblance to the Gossip Stones of Ocarina of Time.
Symbolic Nod
(Submitted by Jario)In Arbiter's Grounds, after getting the Spinner and returning to the room before the mini-boss room, go to the left from where you exited from the mini-boss room. Use the spinner to cross the sand and latch onto the spinner rail on the right. Let it take you to the door. Enter, then Spinner your way across the sand to the curving Spinner rail and go up it. When it drops you on the ground, pass the Stalfos. Go up to the chest that contained the Heart Piece, and get on the spinner rail to the right. Spin your way to the other end, avoiding the rotating spike bar. Let go when you get there, and walk to the edge, but don't jump down. Look over to the short brown strip of metal between two spinner rails. On it are the symbols for each of the medallions in OOT. An interesting easter egg!
Link's Fans
The three girls that hang around outside the STAR game in Castle Town, and mob Link after winning a round of the game, have red, green, and blue hairremind you of anyone? Also, they shout that Link is their hero. Hmmm...
Something on the Ceiling
(Submitted by ZeldaVeteran)If you head into Malo Mart in Kakariko Village, and walk inside, stop, and look to the South West corner of the store, there is a blurry picture of someone or something on the ceiling. Anyone know what that is?
Mini-nod
(Submitted by Jario)I noticed that in Twilight Princess it is possible to perform the roll attack from the Minish Cap. Just roll, then swing your sword directly after rolling to make Link stab forward. It's funny that the game never tells you that you can do this!
Mini-nod
(Submitted by Lank and Eralk Fang)(I received this oddity from the two above nearly simultaneously, so I'm giving them equal credit for the catch. Thanks to Eralk Fang doubly for the screenshot. -ed.)
[Lank] After walking into the Arbiter's Grounds and arriving into the room where you first see the 4 big Poes, walk to the right and through the door. On the walls are sketches of Link with a shield and of Ganon. They're also seen in the room directly beneath this one in the nook that appears after rotating the pillar.
[Eralk Fang] This is a carving throughout the walls of the Arbiter's Grounds that resemble a beast and a man with a shield. Generic enough for a carving. As this picture is from the Wii version, I flipped it around to see the "canon" version of it. Turns out the symbol on the man's shield closely resembles the Kokiri symbol (seen on the Kokiri Shield) from Ocarina of Time! Not only that, there are three symbols above the beast's head. The final form of Ganon in Ocarina of Time had three ponytails. Could this be a carving of the Hero of Time facing off against Ganon?
Tricks of Light and Shadow
(Submitted by Evahn)Before you complete the Lakebed Temple, if you leave the twilight without finding all the Tears of Light, Midna will not be riding on Link's back. However, Midna will be riding on his back in his shadow.
When Zora's Domain is frozen, you can see Link's reflection in the ice. Though Midna will be on Link's back, in the reflection, she is not.
Sagely Fashions
(Submitted by Lil' Wind Kokiri)After you beat Stallord (the boss of Arbiter's Grounds) and during the cutscene when you see that the Mirror of Twilight broke, Look closely at the glowy spirits and the platforms their standing on. They have the Spirit Medallions from Oot on them! I guess this is showing that the spirits are descendants of the 6 sages from Oot.
