Chapter 8, Embarkment

The starless night was cold, but no ran felt the misty sky that fateful night in Hyrule. Mayoree sat on the roof outside of her room, clenching her knees to her body and trying to hold back tears. her auburn hair fluttered in the breeze, drying some of the wetness on her cheeks. She knew she had to be strong like her adoptive Moblin father told her to, Kono would never accept to see her cry like this, but she couldn’t help it. She felt weak and tossed aside by the one person she had followed and admired for the short time she had been near him, and it was shameful for her to think about it.
But she felt a strong bond to Link the first time she had seen him, it wasn’t a loveing thing at first, but a spiritual bond, like she had known him from somewhere before, but she knew that was impossible.
Suddenly there came a sharp knock on her door inside, she didn’t want to tell the person that it was open, but she heard it open anyway. And the painfully familiar soft voice that called.
“ Mayoree, are you here?” Link said as he closed the door, he noticed the room was entiorly dark, but he could just make out the window, and the open frame and latch by the very faint star light that could barely make may through the cloud cover. He knew she was out on the roof.
“ May?” Link said a little louder, but still had a soft voice.
Link popped his head out of the window and paned around, until he saw the dark huddled outline of the slender women rested about ten yards from the window. Link crawled through and walked out carefully onto the roof, though he had been trotting on the castle roff many times in many situations. Link stopped and stared down at her.
“ Are you going to answer me?” Link asked, but she just turned her head away from him even more. Link sat down quietly next to her, he couldn’t see her face, but he knew she was crying. “ will you please speak to me?” Link asked, he put a hand out and touched her shoulder very gently, but she quickly shrugged off his hand and grunted at him. “ i came to tell you when where leaving May...” Link said, hugging his knees to his chest and resting his chin on them, looking out to the sky.
She looked at him out of the corner of her eye. Her stomach tightened as he talked.
“ Sheik thought tommorow morning, that’s means it’s my last night here...” Link said softly, he closed his eyes for a moment. Mayoree slowly turned her beautiful face towards him, her eyes bright with tears.
“ Tomomrow?” She struggled to get out. Links blue eyes opened agian, he smiled warmly at her or a moment.
“ Yes, in the early morning so we can get a head start out of Hyrule field, it’s very big, and will take at least a day’s travel to cross over.” Link explained.
“ Why?” She asked after a few awkward and painful moments.
“ Why what?” Link asked
“ Why can’t I come with you?”
Link paused to answer. “ Because it’s to dangerous, because you might get hurt, and because you would be much better off not following me anymore for this journey.” Link sighed.
“ Why is that.” Her voice quivered and she burried her nose into her long dress.
“ Because I tend to attract dangerous people and things to me, I have enemies I’ve met over time that I’m afraid I might run into agian.” Link explained further, he paused strangely agian and closed his eyes, taking in a deep breath. “ Zelda and I use to sit out and talk like this sometimes.” Link commented.
Mayoree sniffled. “ Good luck...” She said sarcatically.
Link leaned over and tried to touch her agian, but she shrugged him off harder this time.
“ You didn’t even apolozise when you came out here, you never do Link.” She snapped at him all of a sudden.
Link felt that sentence sting. “ I apolozise now, I only wanted to say goodbye to you, this might be the last time I see you for months, even years...”
“ Well it’s to late now, you can leave anytime...” She snapped again. Mayoree felt her inside beat her up and tell her not to say that, she wanted to kiss him and say she was sorry for snapping at him and cry on his shoulder, but she couldn’t do that, It wasn’t in her personality.
Link suddenly rose up and turned round to the window, Mayoree looked after him, her heart told her to stop him from leaving, but her stubborness told her otherwise. Finally she broke out and ran to the window, crying she grabbed him and flipped him around to face her, looking into his kind blue eyes,
“ I’m sorry...” She cried, sniffling and burrying her face into his shoulder, she felt him hold her and rub her back soothingly. pulling her body agianst his, she started to feel secure.
“ Theirs no need for that...” Link said quietly as she weakly wrapped her arms around his neck. She didn’t want him to leave her alone, she wanted to come along and help, but she knew she couldn’t, Mayoree looked up into his kind blue eyes, he smiled. That familair one cornered grin, Mayoree lay her head back down on his shoulder, she felt came, and warm for those lasting moments.
She kissed him hard on the lips and then broke away, covering her mouth as her sniffling stopped. They both stood wide eyed, she had never kissed him before. Mayoree lowered her head and turned away. “ Leave please...” her voice was back to the toughness it was like before. Link sighed, his smile faded and he walked silently from the balcony, the door creaked close with a soft click.
Mayoree knew that might be the only time she would ever see him agian, and in pained her even more to push him away. “ What have I done?” She whispered. but their came no answer. her knees weakened, and she fell to the ground, the wind calming her tears.

The morning was one of the coldest Link could remember in a long time as he rose out of his bed to the sound of Sheik knocking on his door. He had been wide awake most of the night thinking about Mayoree and trying to remember her differently then last night, he had never expected her to break down like that, and wondered why she had for a few minutes as he started to get dressed.
Link had slipped on his cloak and slid the cowl of it over his head as he walked down to the stables where Sheik was waiting for the last hour and a half or so for him to get organised. Link slung the supplies over his right shoulder along with his heavy sword, sheild, quiver with the fairy bow that he had won in the forest temple and a shining golden figurine he had obtained a few months before from yet another adventure.
Link looked over the golden figurine closely, it was a figure of a femal centaur reared up on it’s back legs holding a bow with an arrow tight to the string, it was so life like. Link remembered who had given it to him as a gift, Mayoree, when she first got aqquanted to him she had given it to him as a thank you gift.
Link took a quick detour down the right hall and placed the gold figurine in front of her door, then quickly and quietly backed away, pulling the cowl even farther over his face, he couldn’t face her now, Link had a policy that he knew he must keep right. duty comes before love. he had sworn to Hyrule that he would protect it by all costs and that was exactly what he was going to do, protect his people.
Link stepped threw the castles left double door exit into the stable yard and made the winding path over to the barn. Link looked up to see Sheik fitting the saddle on his horse, a brown mare with a long black mane. Links eyes followed over to his own mount. Lev standing tall to the right danced excitedly and flicked his tail. Link smirked and walked towards his companions for the trip.
“ I see you made it on time Link.” Sheik said as he noticed him walking towards them. Lev snorted and pawed the ground as Link rubbed his powerful neck, placing the bags on the ground next to him, Link noticed then that Sheik had managed to get a saddle on this wild thing, Link could remember the day’s about a year ago when he was trying to befriend the spirited animal.
“ How did you manage to get close to him? He never lets anyone he doesn’t trust even get near him.” Link questioned, looking bewildered and curiously over at Sheik, who was sternly mounted onto his mare. He merely shrugged and grabbed the riegned, fitting his feet into the sterrips.
“ He trusts me well enough Link, we are related and carry a common spirit.” Sheik smiled, and he slowly advanced the horse forwards and faced it back to Link, waiting.
Link secured the saddle bags and rose onto Lev’s back, his black fur was moist from the morning air, Link could barely see the daylight coming over the hroiszon it was very early. Sheik gazed to the horizon as well, then back at Link, his eyes determined.
“ Shall we leave?” Sheik asked. Link took in a breath on air and gave him the same determined stare right back.
“ Let us be on our way friend.” Link answered. Sheik kicked the stirrups into the horses side and it danced and galloped away, the two pairs of hooves echoing in the early morning as Link followed closely with a call of, ‘HAYAH’. and the horses rode off into the mist, dust flowing in streams out behind them, Link didn’t look back as they passed the castle, he didn’t want to. Some time later, snow filtered down from the sky, and all of Hyrule was silent.
