Mailbag, 2005 Edition

Here at The Desert Colossus, I get many letters a week asking about various minutia of the site, pointing out my typos, proposing a new theory, and touching on a myriad of other subjects. For the benefit of all, and to have a little fun, I figured I'd post the letters I receive every month here at the Mailbag. If you want to submit a question specifically to the Mailbag (and it can be about almost anything), use the form at the bottom of the page to directly send an email my way. Or, you can mail it to webmaster [at] desertcolossus [dot] com.

Jario writes:
I hate to tell you that the English-Hylian Translator is completely wrong. Hylian was meant to translate to Japanese, not English. You can't just try to make it work. Random English letters are assigned to random Hylian letters. If you want it to work properly, you need a Hylian font where you type in two English letters to create one Hylian letter, like all Japanese word processors. Unfortunately, your translator is COMPLETELY WRONG. Sorry, but it's true. Please fix the translator, or else everyone will think they can write in Hylian when they can't. It lies, and that's the truth.

Jack replies:
You're not really surprising me as I've always intended the translator to be a fun, game-like thing, rather than a literal translator. I'm well aware of the fact that the only way to go from Hylian -> English and vice versa is through the Japanese language. My fault, however, lies with the fact that there was no disclaimer to this fact (though, there was originally, somehow I ditched it prior to the official version's launch). That however, has been rectified. I apologize for your feeling misled, 'twas not my intention.

Whocares writes:
Are you ever going to finish the Proving Two Hyrules page?

Jack replies:
Eventually. There are other things around the site, and other articles, I feel that are more "necessary" to complete first than that.

I wish I could tell you, but even I don't know how old that geezer is. And, if I showed you the photos, then he'd quit and where would that leave me? Ezlo-less!

You'll definitely see regular changes to that dialouge box. Probably once a week, maybe more frequent. I want to change it soon enough that it doesn't get old, but wait enough so everyone can see it.

Jack replies:
I can't wait until it comes out, i hope it really does have 100 hours and that's just not a marketing ploy! Even OoT could last 100 hours if you walked everywhere... And, thanks for the compliment.

My friend and i were playing the minish cap. We had both beaten the game. My friend found this first. In your grandfather's house, there are 2 things. One is on the first floor in the room he is in. By the closet window to the door, if you poke it makes that weak wall sound, yet if you bomb it, it goes away. We can't figure out how to do something to it. The second thing is in the bedroom. If you walk by the table Ezlo will pop up and say something along the lines of, "hey it seems like there is a secret here, it's ok, you don't have to hide anything from me." We've tried everything we could, but nothing would happen. We were wondering if we could get ur help on any of this.
Thank you for your time.

Jack replies:
There's actually nothing at either spot. I think they're either stuff that was intended to point to secrets but the secrets were never put in, or nonsense to confuse the gamer. Sorry.

Zora writes:
Hey will there ever be a re-make of OoT or MM for Nintendo DS? I know Nintendo mad Super Mario 64 DS and if they could make that good of a game, LoZ would be no problem.

Animerican14 writes:
Hey again- just before I begin and for future reference, i'll change between this username and just Animerican in what I write to you, so...erm, yeah. Just a little footnote.
First of all, and you've heard this a lot (I'm sure), this is both one of the most informative and "funnest" Zelda-related sites I've been on. I absolutely love your "Ask Ezlo" and "Caption Game" sections; they're very much fun reads and always add something creative to the zelda community. Please continue to work on this site and always add a little something new to the mix.
Now my first experiences with Zelda were through the oracle games, and really haven't thought much about it until playing windwaker, which really made me more of a zelda fan. Going from there, since I don't have that much spending cash and I only have three systems (GBC, GBA, & GCN) ), which Zelda titles on these systems do you think are the most worth getting? I know for sure I'm getting TP, but I'm just wondering which other titles would probably introduce me best to the franchise.
Again, thanks for providing all of us with what you have to offer on this site, and continue providing this much-needed entertainment to all of us. 'Till then, good luck with all future endeavors you make, in both life and this site!

Jack replies:
Thanks for the compliment, I'm trying hard to make this a site that's both fun and "educating" for Zelda. As to which games you should get for those systems, since you have the GBA, I would suggest Nintendo Classics: Legend of Zelda for the GBA, and Minish Cap for the GBA so you can idea of where Zelda was/how it started, and the direction in which it is headed now. If you want to try more, get Link's Awakening DX for the GBC (but play it on your GBA) since it's a wonderful game.

Jami writes:
I just wanted to say that your site is really awesome! But are you ever going to have sections for characters, items, etc. for the Wind Waker?

Jack replies:
I am in fact, as part of my overhaul of the Game Guides which you can check out at the Under Development page. Though, I can't promise I'll make a Characters page, I'll definitely look into it. The items page will happen however.

Whocares writes:
Jack, you won't believe what I found out for your timeline! The Twilight Princess comes directly after the Wind Waker! That will be useful, won't it?
P.S. I hope you did well on your LSAT!

Also, new viewers won't be able to see at first glance all the cool stuff hidden in your site.

Oh definitely, any future layout will be sure to emphasize the more hidden aspects and features of the site and place the "hotter" sections in more prominence that the more traditional sections. Thanks for the input!

Aaron writes:
When you were talking about killer app were you talking about something like the caption game or ask ezlo?

Jack replies:
Yes. Something that it unique and a crowd-drawer, like those two features.

Zora writes:
Well, Ezlo was no help so will you help me out? Do you know if there's going to be a remake of OoT or MM for Nintendo DS? I mean, if they can make Super Mario 64 for DS then Nintendo is perfectly capable of making a LoZ!

Jack replies:
Probably not, BUT from what I understand, Revolution (the next-gen Nintendo system) will have a feature where you can download classic Nintendo games from past consoles and play them on the Revolution. It seems probable that OoT at least would be available that way, and certainly possible MM would be included as well.

Prime writes:
In your august 24th update, you said that you had to discard about a third of the ask elzo and mailbag submissions because it would have taken too long otherwise. Did you actually delete these said submissions, or did you merely put them on hold? I ask this because I myself had submitted an ask elzo submission(long, detailed, well thought out. No eggplant or tingle jokes, either), and it was not shown in the update, or any updates there after. I had wrote it in the submissions box, and can not recreate it, so I would appreciate if this could be cleared up, and more so if my submission(for ask elzo) could be posted.

Jack replies:
Unfortunately yeah I deleted a bunch of the submissions I had received randomly. I had about 200 submissions or so at the time, and there was just no way I could get them all done and get the new ones coming in done as well. I'm really sorry about the deletion, but it was necessary at the time.

What is the Dark Tribe? I saw in the Under Development section that you were going to have a section called Who are the Dark Tribe?, but it was cancelled. Why?

The Dark Tribe is the mysterious group of people that created the Dark Mirror and Trident of Power. I really couldn't find much to write about for them, unfortunately. I'll probably do a second play through of FSA at some point, and write down all the relevant quotes about the Dark Tribe, and then resurrect the article at that point.

I'm writing to you to see your thoughts on TP's official placement in the Zelda timeline, between OoT and tWW. In my view, I for one do not know how they'll be able to fit in another "epic quest" between OoT & tWW, which is the time of the Great Flood, without contradicting story elements or making no sense. In that case, do you think they might include the Great flood at or near the ending, making the conclusion a "bittersweet" one to the game? (bitter as in old Hyrule being mostly wiped out but sweet that the rest survive and make it on the mountaintops). Or do you think something else? I'd just like to here the view of others on this subject.

Jack ponders:
I think that it is very probable that the Great Flood could take place at the end of TP, and that the whole Twilight Situation is the deal that leads to the flood occuring in the first place. However, I think it is equally probably that Nintendo changes course and decides to redo TP's placement in the "timeline." I'm personally taking a wait and see approach.

Jack explains:
I hate to admit it, but Minish Vaati is adorable. Unfortunately, I am not Nintendo, so I won't be producing any Vaati-specific games in the near future. Perhaps a fun little feature here in the future...

Andrew writes:
this is a great site but I think you should put the song of storms and the song of time in the jukebox

Jack responds:
I only put the songs that Sirius composed for TDC in the Jukebox. As such, I won't be adding any other pieces to that feature, sorry.

I must admit this is a great website. One quick question: On your Hyrule RPG, Episode 4, Dredging in the Swamp, how do get past the old man blocking the way to the desert? I can't seem to do it.

Jack explains:
You need to find three Rupees spread throughout the episode. I'm not going to spoil it for you, but they are fairly obvious as to where they are.

[Ed. note: I've abbreviated this letter.]

I just read the Zelda chronology you have assembled at Desert Colossus and though I found it interesting and very well constructed there was one thing I wanted to add. Now, it's probably been up for awhile so you may have received this info previously and if you have then my apologies for being redundant. That said, you mention in the information concerning the Wind Waker that the Zora and the Kokiri have died out. It seemed pretty clear to me, on playing the game, that the Zora evolved into the Rito and that the Koroks in the Forest Haven with the Great Deku Tree are either the Kokiri or their descendants. Looking at the Zora anatomy in Ocarina of Time, they have a kind of stretch of skin or swim-flap between their arm and torso that corresponds closely with the wings of the Rito. Furthermore, given the way the series tends to use bloodlines to establish new heroes/heroines/sages, it seems logical to assume that since Medli is a sage, she must be descended from a prior sage. Given the above anatomical similarity, it seems reasonable to conclude that she must have been descended from the Zora, perhaps from Ruto herself.

Jack explains:
Excellent letter, thank you very much for your input. I have written in articles newer than Wind Waker's release that the Koroks and Kokiri are one in the same (check the Races and Cultures page), so there I certainly agree with you. Though, there is much debate over the question of Rito and Zora being of the same family, so to say. Any artilce where it mentions the Kokiri dying out is just based on the information we had available prior to WW's release, so I had no idea of the possibility of Koroks. I apologize for the confusion. As for my own opinion, I've also written about it at the Who Are the Rito? theory that it is plausible that Medli is the result of some distant mating between a Zora and Rito that didn't spawn the Rito race, but rather just created a mixed blood-line that Medli descended from.

Err... not to spoil your day but you had some little mistakes and missed some stuff at the "who woulda thunk it?" page:

1.-The Gerudo Symbol also apears in the Uni Link's Armour 2.- The Marathon Man doesn't transform into a SkullKID cuz he's not a kid. Do you remember when Navi says: "So, this is what happens to kids that get lost in the woods" ? Also he wasn't lost, he simply entered the woods. 3.-About the Navi when it glows green: The eagle says time, but it could do something after you play a certain song...

Jack responds:
Well, (1) keep in mind I wrote/received those submissions back before Majora's Mask came out, so I didn't really know much of Uni/Fierce Deity Link's existence; (2) doesn't the Carpenter's ghastly son turn into a monster too? He wasn't young, I believe. Though, point well taken. Finally, (3) what is this song, I've emptied my entire songbook into that eagle, without result. Someone want to clarify this?

Hi Webmaster, my question is: Is it my puter or this Hyrule RPG game? Can you please tell me why I can't get beyond the 1st stage? When I meet the guard on the way to the Graveyard, he kills me when I try to use my attck.

Also where are the rupees? Would you please give me explicit help on how to optimize this game? I have talked to townspeople and entered buildings that's it. Are rupees in the 1st stage?

Jack explains:
Well, as for the guard, there is a specific combination of Attack and Defend which you must enter to get past him. If you die, just try a different combination. I'll give you a hint though, it's fpur steps and they begin and end with attacking. As for the Rupees, the use of money so far only plays a role in Episode 4, where you have to gather three Rupees to pay off a drifter to stop blocking the way to the Desert (my favorite episode thus far).

I think this is a very awesome website, and you have put a long time into it. I looked at the site history and it seems like you've gone through a lot. I have recently become a big Zelda fan and this is where I've come to look at anything that is Zelda.

On the Hylian language, I have translated most of the Japanese symbols and understand much of the Hylain writing. It was very time consuming.

Jack replies:
Thanks for the compliments! As for the Hylian Language, I refuse to tackle it myself. I simply don't have a good year or two to learn Japanese and then translate it from there. It'd be nice if Nintendo released a Roman-Hylian Alphabet, but I won't hold my breath.
