Here at The Desert Colossus, I get many letters a week asking about various minutia of the site, pointing out my typos, proposing a new theory, and touching on a myriad of other subjects. For the benefit of all, and to have a little fun, I figured I'd post the letters I receive every month here at the Mailbag. If you want to submit a question specifically to the Mailbag (and it can be about almost anything), use the form at the bottom of the page to directly send an email my way. Or, you can mail it to webmaster [at] desertcolossus [dot] com.

About the Zoras. In one of the trailers, Link appears to be following something in the river. As many have pointed out, it looks a lot like a Zora. The problem I had with believing this is the fact that it could be an intelligent fish and that the swimming object seems to disappear. But, then I saw something. A few milliseconds after the swimming creature disappears, I noticed something rise out of the river. It was blueish white and had a humanoid form. That probable Zora was most likely the same thing Link was following down the river, it just turned around to see if Link was still behind it. Sorry I don\'t have a screenshot. However, the video is easy to find. Watch closely though! Thought screenspotting could use a little update.
Jack replies:
Nice catch, but unfortunately screenspotting is quite dead, now that the game is out and all. I put your catch about the Twilight King on the front page however, so thanks for the heads-up for that.

Cuz if u think about it, everything happens for a reason. Do you think so? Anyway, I would have never guessed you were the MAILMAN!! Whoa, haha. When i played TMC, i noticed u could jump over link! wow, could you give me lessons? How would you spell "roof" plural? I know i'm way too random. Guess what? my cousin doesn't want his son. I feel really bad for my cousins son. (his name is max.) technically, he's my fourth cousin. max, i mean. but i asked my mom if we could adopt him and she....she said no. Would you adopt your fourth cousin if your third cousin didnt want him? ..... /=\\ sorry for the random questions. and thank you for answereing this. It is truly adivce i have needed. |

I suppose I might adopt in that situation if i could actually support the kid, and I knew him. Otherwise there wouldn't be much I could do, would there be? |

Okay, so first of all, I absolutely love this site. Great job! Now, I was reading that letter sent in by Jaz, the one where they ask what hand the Triforce is on for Zelda and Ganondorf. You said probably their left, but that's wrong. Zelda's is always on her right hand, and in OoT, Ganondorf's is also on his right hand. In WW, his starts on his right hand (when he's strangling Tetra) but then shifts to his left hand (right before the Triforce goes out of everybody). Just wanted to let you know. Again, awesome site!

1. is there a fourth god? because in fs there are four links green-farore, blue-nayru, red-din, purple? could this mean there is another god maybe a brother god? could it be majora? because he has godly shadow powers, maybe the sister gods banished majora to the world between dimensions (termina) because he was so evil. wow i really lost myself for a second there. 2. Heres a tricky question for ya what does the legend of zelda mean to you?, why is it such a good series of games?, what makes it stand out from other games? 3. i live in new zealand so i have to wait while everyone else gets tp, not only that but i cant afford to get a wii and the game so i have to wait even longer for the gc version to come out.....i hate waiting! |
Jack replies:
(1) There isn't, at least in Hyrule. It's a very prevalent theory though due to the symbolic evidence. (2) Oh yes, good question. Um, I'd have to say the Legend of Zelda means an amazing storyline that has captured my imagination sicne I first played it many, many years ago. The story, characters, and style of play separates from all the other action/adventure/rpg games out there and those are what makes LoZ such a hallmark in videogaming. (3) Yeah i agree, waiting is the worst—but look at it this way—more time to save up!

Jack replies:
Let me preface my remarks by saying we don't know what age Link is in TWW (which i assume you're referring to). The graphics are stylized very much, so he looks younger than he is, for sure. Plus, the game says he had his coming of age, and doesn't 12 seem a little young to come of age? I think 15 is a nice, round number, and I'll stick to it for the time being. But, great question nonetheless! And thank you for the kind words. We're certainly not number one, but I like to think we're pretty up there. Thanks!

Thirdly, Who's your favourate zelda character. Fourthly, Why do you hate tingle so much... his character idea is genious, he's a middle aged guy, he's brought up to think he's a fairy, so he dresses like one, he can't actaully fly so i just floats on balloons, he can't do magic so he invents his own magic words that he's so proud of.. he some how got in jail which is hilarious and he sells map and translates them to you for high prices, apart from the last bit... he may be creepy but that character is funny as hell!? |
Jack replies:

I think Wii looks absolutely amazing, and I cannot wait for it to come out. My favorite character is... hrm, I suppose Orca, because he doesn't mess around even though he's ancient. Definitely not, Zelda will be released this November, and if it isn't, all hell would probably break loose. Plus, they'd miss the crucial Christmas season, and that could be killer.

YOu say that the WW link is not related to the Oot link. You also say that Link didn't return from Termina to hyrule. I agree with you there. Don't forget however, that link is a Hylian that was placed in kokiri villiage. is it possible that link has a family, like a cousin or even a sister that could have been desended into the people in WW. Another crazy theory is that link died and his spirit obtained links body. Also, the guy who carved majoras mask out of the beasts armor is in fact link.
Jack replies:
The family theory I doubt because it was Link's mother who brought him to Kokiri Forest, and why would she do that with just Link if she had other children and abandon them amidst the war. Cousins are plausible, but not siblings. As to the Majora's Mask thing, that takes place in the manga, and is as such not considered canon, so that's not in play.

said "Forest Temple". Could this mean that in "Twilight Princess",
Link is going to revisit all six temples (Forest Temple, Fire Temple,
Water Temple, Shadow Temple, Spirit Temple, and Temple of Time)? Does
this mean the six sages from Ocarina of Time are going to play a role in
"Twilight Princess"? Or maybe the storyline of "Twilight Princess"
will have to involve Link trying the protect the six sages from their
temples being taken over by the Twilight Realm? THAT'LL BE TOTALLY SWEET!!! What's you're opinion on this, Jack? P.S. I TOTALLY LOVE THIS SITE!!! THIS IS THE BIGGEST ZELDA INTERACTIVE SITE I'VE EVER BEEN TO! I BASICALLY AM A BIG FAN OF THIS SITE!! I COME HERE EVERYDAY JUST TO READ ALL THE ARTICLES THAT YOU, YOUR STAFF, AND ALL THE ZELDA FANS CREATE!! |
Jack replies:
It would be amazing if we saw (say) Hyrule 50 years after the events of Ocarina of Time. Other locations we definitely know about is the Goron Mines (maybe a deeper part of the Goron City, or in Death Mountain?) and we saw a screenshot of Hyrule Castle looking like it did in OoT. I think your theory is a definite possibility! (Though, where in Hyrule is Toaru Village exactly?) And thanks for the kind words!
Noah writes:
Well, aside from the note that this site ROCKS, there has been one question that even Ezlo cant answer, what brought you into Zelda? What brought me into Zelda was TWW.
Jack replies:
Link's Awakening, which is still one of my absolute favorite Zelda games. (and thanks!)
Jaz writes:
What hand is the Triforce on on Link's hand? I watch the Super Smash Bros. thing over and over again (you know, the cut scenes that you can watch if you don't touch the controller when you turn on the game) but it goes so fast and there are two gloved hands. I can't tell which one is Link. My friends and I think it is on the left, because Link is left handed. Which hand is the Triforce really on? And what about Zelda and Ganondorf? (I asked this on Ask Ezlo, but you/Ezlo didn't answer!)
Jack replies:
|
The Triforce is on Link's dominant hand—his left.

Why can't they put the zelda mangas in english? We have a ton of anime that's translated already to english. Why not Zelda? Does Mr. Miyamoto think that nobody will buy them? I think they'd sell faster than even the games themselves! What's your opinion?
Jack replies:
Hoestly, I wish I could tell you. I have absolutely no idea why Nintendo ignores the cash cow that is the English-speaking manga market. They are very unwise to not tap into such a deep source of revenue. I can't think of any explanation for it other than an assumption that manga doesn't sell well here.
Gamefreak writes:

Alright, so I was just wondering why some of the fanfictions in the library are actually on the site and others in the .doc format. Is it because of a difference in the way they were sent in? Thanks for answering!
Jack replies:
Yeah it's just a difference of the way it's sent in. Though, I must say, .doc is a far easier format for me to work with because I can jsut upoad it and not have to edit it to work on the site.
Jario writes:
Hey, Jack. I'm not sure why you think Link never returned from Termina. That's NOT TRUE. You see him in the Lost Woods at the end of the game. Yes, that's supposed to be the Lost Woods.
Jack replies:
I am quite aware of that, which is why there is a disclaimer on top of the "Is Link of OoT related to Link of TWW?" article. I have since replayed Majora's Mask after writing that article, and countless other ones on the site, and have corrected myself. Now I have to correct thos articles!
lol writes:
Do you know where to find Zelda ringtones? I want one on my cell-phone!
Jack replies:
Try Googling "free zelda ringtones". Be careful what sites you visit though, because many are likely to be of ill repute.
Jario writes:
I forgot my password for the commenting system! what do I do?

Origami Hoshi writes:
I've invented origami Zelda characters! If you like, I could post up the instructions to make a Garo robe, Garo master and the little old lady from Majora's Mask.

Whocares writes:
Isn't the hardest thing about making a timeline trying to find out which came first, OOT or LTTP? I mean, of course it would be hard: TWW first) Then how did LTTP come in? A clue might be in the ancient Hylian in LTTP. LTTP first) Then wouldn't TWW mention something about this game? Also, how did the King know about the Hero of Time, even though time went backwards to when he was almost unimportant?
Jack replies:
Well, we know OoT came first because it explains how Ganondorf rose to infamy, how the Triforce was removed from the Sacred Realm, the legend of the Hero of Time, etc. The second part of your question is apt though, and demonstrates why time travel is terrible: the inevitable paradoces.
Aaron writes:
Nice work getting the Hylian Alphabet up and running. This will make the games more enjoyable now if I see any Hylian symbols.

Animerican writes:
Hey, Jack! Great site as always...what I want to do is ask what your opinion is on the now-told rev. functionality for Zelda TP. With us drawing ever closer to the Big Bang that is E3, what do you think of the possiblity that TP for the GCN may end up getting the axe and end up as a Revolution only title? TSA of The Hylia (and others, I'm sure) seems to think that there's a big chance that this'll be the case, and Zelda being a launch title for Rev. could be the Rev's "great secret" Nintendo has hinted at. I for one hope that this is certainly not the case; Twilight Princess, at the very most, should appear on both systems.
Jack replies:
I think that such an action on Nintendo's part would be a profoundly stupid act. It would turn the amount of money required to buy and play TP from $50 to $250, because then you would have to buy a new system just for the game. Doing so would definitely limit the opening market available to TP, especially if it doesn't arrive around the holidays. I, for one, hope it is for GC and has special features playable on Revolution, that way no one is denied access to the game, and there's an incentive to invest in a Revolution.

Hey Jack, I haven't been on the site lately, but I was just wonderin
how your progress was going on the map. (I'm pretty interested in
seeing how your figuring everything out.)
P.S. I'm not sure if I added this into my first email- don't forget to put a timeline!! Thanks a million! |
Jack replies:
I drew out a rough sketch, but I haven't done much more than that. I really need to pur over text dumps of some games and see if anything about geography is mentioned. I'd like to have a little substance to it, rather than make everything up, you know? And, I'll be sure to incldue a rough timeline in it!

Phantom Hourglass... I'm sure you've already heard the news. Do you think it'll be a sequel to WW? (I also got hooked on the series through WW... actually through SSBM but WW was my first game...) If it is, do you believe that they'll keep the characters or do you think they'll get rid of them? My theory is that they'll keep the characters and add some new ones as well. What's your take?
Jack replies:
If it is a sequel to TWW, then it'll probably involve mostly Tetra and the Pirates. Considering the proliferation of water and the boat I think it's a good bet that PM is a sequel to TWW. At least I hope so, TWW needs a sequel!
Whocares writes:
Jack, listen. In TWW, go to Nintendo Gallery. Take a look at what's on the wall to the left of Carlov. It's the Bunny Hood, Goron Mask, Keaton Mask, and All-Night Mask from MM! Does this mean Carlov made some of these masks? Mabye you should put this in the "Four Things You (Might Have) Never Noticed in TWW and What They Mean" article.
Jack replies:
Could be an Easter Egg, but I'll definitely have to take a look at it. Thanks for the heads up!
Crimsonrose writes:
I know this isn't really a question, but I'd like to put to rest the theory of "Who is Link looking for in MM?" I have infallible proof that it is Navi that he is looking for. On the site "Zelda Infinite"(it's in your links) under Fun Stuff is the official manga translations. The third book down is Majora's Mask manga nad in the first chapter, page 20, it specifcally says that he is looking for Navi. I just wanted to tell you that.
Jack replies:
This is true, but (and there's always a but, isn't there?) manga isn't considered canon, and therefore it can't settle the question definitively.
Lindsey writes:
Why wont they put the zelda mangas in English??
Jack replies:
That's a great question, considering the market for them. However, you can find the mangas translated at some Zelda sites like Zelda Legends, The Hylia, and Zelda Infinite (all on my affiliates list).

Study for the whole week up to the test, every night for a set amount of hours and leave at least an hour before you go to bed so your brain has time to process what you just studied. Make a plan so you don't get stressed out and spend the entire time you are studying thinking about how hard studying is, because you won't pay attention to the material. Finally, be confident when taking the test that you know the stuff, and that you will do well. Good luck!

(1) In your time-line, you said that Aryll left Outset with Link, Zelda,

island. She might have not leaved the island at all. Please fix this. (2) In OOT, who is Link is in love with, Saria or Malon? I only need to know because of a story I'm thinking of writing to TDC. (3) You should really put more than OOT songs in the jukebox. Also, put a button on the website that takes you to the home page. One last thing, add to the LA guide that you can defeat the final form with one hit from the boomerang! What a weakling! (4) No offense, but your LTTP walkthrough is completely usless!!!! All you tell us is how to get to the dungeons, and even that stinks! Just erase the walkthrough and rewrite it. (5) You should make it so that when someone sends you a letter through the mailbag, the postman runs to the guy with the stamp, gives him a letter, and runs back. That would be cool. Also, where do you live? (6) Why are you so busy!?!?!?!?!? |
Jack replies:

(2) I'd really prefer not to become embroiled in the Shipper Wars, sorry. Though, personally, I don't really think Link liked anyone in that game. (3) The only songs in the Jukebox are the ones made by Sirius. Since she's not making midis anymore, I really cannot add anymore to the Jukebox. If you click the "Desert Colossus" text at the top of the page it'll take you to the homepage. And I've heard that one before, thanks for reminding me! (4) Despite your excellently worded constructive criticism... erm, I should remind you that the walkthrough is Overworld only. Sorry if that bothers you but I haven't played LttP in years, and really can't just write an indepth one from scratch, especially when there's no demand for one. If you'd like to make one you are more than welcome to submit it. (5) That would be cool but I doubt I'd ever get it done. It'd be complicated. As to your second question I live in Boston, MA. (6) I go to school full time AND I have a full time job, do I really need to explain? |
